I agree with the loss of personal liberty, but the problem with taking it too far is that you end up with people who cannot function in society at the end of long sentences. It's not unknown for some of them to deliberately commit crimes in order to get sent back inside.

This, more than anything. It's a lot cheaper for the abattoir to send all 'mixed scraps' to bulk consumers than it is to separate them, trim them down and package for human consumption, given the volumes involved.
