Yes. But the key thing is that you have full control of pretty much everything except the power switch. Which is in contrast to fully cloud-based services where you have control over basically nothing.
It is self-hosted since while you aren't responsible for the bits that are most likely to go wrong (hardware, networking, etc.), you still have full control over the data and any version updates, patching, etc.
Yeah, that's what I was talking about - we're seeing a decent number of customers who outsource the hardware but maintain control of the data by self-hosting in AWS/Azure.
It's a bit of a mixed bag, depends a lot on the company. But concerns around data sovereignty have lead a lot of our customers to move from public cloud services to self-hosting in private clouds.
I also worked for a British Telecoms company as well. I was firstname.lastname@britishtelecomms.co.uk and there was firstname.3.lastname@britishtelecomms.co.uk - we never did figure out who firstname.2.lastname@britishtelecomms.co.uk was. :D
Both my closest Boots locations still have them. The main one on the High Street has five self-service and one manual till that they take customers over to if the self-service isn't working.
I regularly stay in hostels with shared dorms (typically two to three times a year) and while female-only dorms are relatively common, the majority of dorm rooms are mixed gender. This has been the case in Europe and North/South America, I don't know if it's any different in Asia.
They don't have separate fields for given and family names? That's uncommon.
As to the strictness, I once ended up with my family and given names reversed - so that I was (say) 'MR HOWARD DAVID ANDERSON' instead of 'MR ANDERSON DAVID HOWARD' and it wasn't a problem at all.
Naturally it's difficult to predict timelines, but we're already seeing the rate of advancement starting to plateau. GPT-4 was a huge leap in code quality over GPT-3 for example, but from what my engineering teams have said the jump from 4 to 5 doesn't bring nearly as big an increase in...
I'm not completely convinced. AI is good at solving known patterns, but less so when it comes to novel solutions. Certainly what we've found to date is that basic donkey work like login screens, basic UI elements like lists, etc. is quite easily handed off to AI, but where we need to do...
The customer choice was using the supermarket that doesn't have a policy of staffed checkouts. Both my local Tesco Extra and Lidl have self-service options (scan as you shop in Tesco, and self-service tills in both), but they also always have at least one staffed till. Hence if I wanted to use...
