Has there been any word on how Scotland's proposed high speed line fits in here? Will they be planning a fairly non-direct route via Carstairs which adds to Glasgow-Edinburgh journey time but creates the best journey times from Glasgow/Edinburgh to London?
The current projections of 3 hr 30...
I'm not sure I completely agree with your claim that Brighton in no way has a capacity problem. Platform 9 would be fine, although it would be outside the gateline. But slotting an extra platform on the road inbetween platforms 7/8 would eat into the length of platforms 7/8, so they could only...
But if the new paths became available on the Mole Valley/Hastings line, then I think it's not a wild proposal. Specifically for the Sussex coast: Sussex is a very rural county inland (hence the sometimes flimsy justifications for new lines like Lewes-Uckfield) but very well populated on the...
BML2s aim is to create a second FAST route from Brighton to London, avoiding key bottlenecks such as Haywards Heath and East Croydon. Why? Because BML1 is full at these bottlenecks. For better or worse, BML2 is unlikely to materialise. Obviously you cant shift Brighton-London trains from the...
But that's the huge flaw with the Uckfield-Lewes line that BML2 tries to address.. it's hardly a through route from Tunbridge Wells to Brighton, with the unfortunate layout of Lewes station meaning a complex reversal (reversing outwith the station), which is not common practice on the railways...
Also, if only the DfT etc. were a bit more creative with Crossrail, then the opportunities are expanded, you could have Southampton (inc. airport) - Reading - Heathrow - the City - Stansted, all under the wires.
Wishful thinking of course!
Thanks for that.
Yes, it's Edinburgh - London super off peak return.
Just out of curiosity, if someone wanted to get from London to Glasgow, since East Coast do 'any permitted' super off peak singles at half the usual price as far as Edinburgh, is it allowed to get London Terminals -...
Travelling from London to Edinburgh, leaving around 4 - 5pm, I would have to wait until 7pm on a weekday to be able to use a super-off peak return ticket (return portion) on the direct service up the east coast.
However, the East Coast website suggests I can take any early-evening Glasgow...
It might make sense to have the Corby services moved to the new Thameslink/Southern franchise e.g. one Bedford service per hour extended, maybe even include stopping services to Leicester.
Thanks for the replies.
I've decided to go with an open return (off peak) on the southern website from brighton to cambridge costing only £16.80 with their 25% off promotion, and my trip back from gatwick is covered therefore.
Going to Stansted soon from Brighton one-way (travelling off-peak). The normal single is just over £25 with a railcard.
I seem to have missed the cheap £3 advance tickets to Victoria (that is with an oyster single and single from Tottenham Hale for £12).
I typed in Brighton to Cambridge...
A school teacher came and asked for some recently (I think for an art class - some kind of giant ticket montage)
The rule was the tickets had to be two days beyond their end-date before they could be given out.
East Coast have cheap (walk-on?) fares which are discounted Super Off-Peak tickets.
Type in London to Edinburgh on their website and you'll be offered a £37.50 fare with a railcard.

I should add that only the Super Off Peak singles are discounted...
I believe there used to be a direct Ashford (starting at Dover?) to Manchester service back in the 1990s (?). I imagine one via HS1 and WCML would be a whole lot quicker!
It would be good if the trains could tilt for the WCML section too. It would all pair very neatly with a transmanche...
I'm not sure how profitable a non-London open-access service would be, and it seems that extending international services north is a no-no for now (unfortunately) due to the border/customs malarkey.
But it would be good and a much better use of the HS1 space than the current South Eastern...
Given this line uses in-cab signalling, is there actually any reason why the line speed for HS1 should be 186mph if the trains using the line are sufficiently modern? (on the straight sections at least)
Basically what i am asking is, with Eurostar getting new trains, will these be able to...
Maybe a better and more realistic route for BML2 would be to upgrade the Horsham-Dorking-London line, and with a (very) short chord connecting Angmering to Arundel.
Then West Coastway trains to Victoria which currently run via Hove could instead begin at Worthing, head west for a short while...
But it could still be useful in meaning east coastway trains from london run fast via Uckfield instead of Haywards Heath, freeing up space on the BML for Brighton services.
With electrification and increased line speed, I wonder how long East Croydon to Lewes via Uckfield would take non-stop?
