LNER's new CAF fleet: what should it be called?

CAF are a Basque company so how about “Ekialdea”?

LNER announce CAF fleet (Class 897)

SNCF have just ordered something similar from CAF for Paris-Toulouse and Paris-Clermont: https://www.railtech.com/rolling-stock/2023/07/24/sncfs-new-oxygene-train-sets-begin-test-phase-before/ No idea if it’s the same platform underneath with a different name or if the Civity platform is...

    Whippet buses Cambridgeshire

Back in the early naughties their fleet was almost entirely ex-London Titans. Made for an interesting experience when the drivers floored it on the A14.

    Stations with roads inside

Indeed - and the MML does seem particularly blessed with good examples (Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield), very skilfully converted in the case of Nottingham.

    Eurostar to Cologne

I’m amazed they understood what you were asking for. Might try the Peterborough ticket office next time I have a E* connection.

    Stations with roads inside

I haven’t been to Paddington for a while, but you certainly used to be able to clearly see the Motorail access road and loading areas on the left when leaving from the low-numbered platforms. Victoria obviously has the taxi rank/short stay car park above the Central side platforms (accessed...

Why does West Coast Main Line only keep its minor stations among intercity lines from London?

As someone who lives almost exactly halfway between Peterborough and Grantham, I regularly wish that Castle Bytham, Essendine or Tallington had stayed open (or that the ECML had taken a wiggle to serve Stamford). But as other posters have said, this really is quite an empty part of the country...

Mobile Phone Network in the Channel Tunnel

I hadn’t realised that only some UK networks were available in the northern tunnel (I’m on EE and get reasonable 4G then tend to roam on Bouygues on the way back). 1697818363 This is definitely the case.

Alternative Options for Tourists when Travelcards are Withdrawn

In the days of the (terrible) Tramlink ticket machines you could get a paper version from those too. Long gone now, of course.

    What car should I buy?

I ran a cheap 10 year old Picasso for a bit. Although superficially they feel quite flimsy (as French cars often do), underneath they are reasonably tough and surprisingly easy to repair even for a very unenthusiastic DIY mechanic. Unfortunately for the OP, manual versions are pretty rare (and...

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

The NVR has one, which I think fits rather well with their unusual (for a heritage line) collection of stock, including CIWL coaches and a Swedish rail car. I’d much rather that sort of variety than wall-to-wall Mk1s (which admittedly they do have too).

Airports where you can take a shortcut to avoid duty free shops

You can definitely get to platforms 3&4 from the departure lounge but for 1&2 we had to go back through the shop.

Airports where you can take a shortcut to avoid duty free shops

I wonder if it’s technically within a British ‘control zone’ so not actually EU territory?

Airports where you can take a shortcut to avoid duty free shops

To my amazement they have managed to make the Eurostar departure area at Bruxelles Midi even worse by installing a huge duty free shop right after security. This one has the unique distinction of everyone having to pass through twice (when entering the departure lounge then again when boarding...

    Ah OK, my mistake.

XC desperately needs more rolling stock

Also I’m pretty sure the Brugge factory (formerly BN) is long gone. (There are some surprising similarities between Voyagers and some of the SNCB stock built by Brugge at the same time like the AM96 emus - window and door shapes and so on - even though they are totally unrelated in principle...

XC desperately needs more rolling stock

XC are the only operator (apart from a token EMR once a day) between Peterborough and Leicester. It effectively is the local service for Stamford, Oakham and Melton. (Source: it’s my local line)

XC desperately needs more rolling stock

Loading gauge aside, something like SNCF’s Regio 2N which has a mixture of (single and double deck) coaches of different lengths, with two sets of double doors on the short single deck coaches: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regio_2N?wprov=sfti1

Shortest lived stock that saw regular service?

At least the P89s are still going strong in Essen!

Alternative Options for Tourists when Travelcards are Withdrawn

I successfully used contactless in both Brussels and Antwerp this summer, though I’m not sure Antwerp has a cap - however you’re not charged for subsequent touches (when changing trams for example) within an hour of beginning your journey.
