It won't be a tram though. It will be tram-trains running on HR infrastructure to HR regulations throughout, bar the 300 metres on-street in Cardiff Bay.
There's also been a political edge to it in Wales. Carwyn Jones has repeatedly pointed out the fact that there is no industrual action in Wales over the role of guards compared to England, and that Welsh government are working with the unions and not against them.
The only place that there is a chance of DOO ending up in Wales would be on the Valley lines that will be tram-train operated from Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil into Cardiff.
Otherwise the Welsh Govt came out early on last September and guaranteed a guard on every train in Wales.
According to the presentation that was briefly released on Tuesday:
£15m has been allocated to improve accessibility and provide step free access at Wales' 247 stations.
Considering that it cost £12m to make 5 stations fully accessible recently, how many stations will be made fully accessible...
It doesn't look like they plan to terminate the trains coming down from Pontypridd via the City line at Central or Queen St, instead they'll be sent straight back up the Valleys.
From the AMs presentation:
"2tph from Pontypridd ‘divert’ via City Line but don’t terminate at Central i.e. Aberdare...
The location of Cardiff's HR stations long pre-date the formation of the Welsh Government and the Labour party itself. As was explained extensively in the Metro thread, Cardiff is a compact city with crowded streets.
Cathays services the University, Welsh Govt civil service and the civic centre...
Why on earth was it taken down though? Surely the cloak and dagger secrecy has now ended?
Luckily I saved it, but the file is too large to upload. PM me with your email address if you want a copy.
As WelshBluebird has said, bikes are officially banned on those trams, so the answer to whether there are any tram or tram-rain services in the UK that allow full size bikes on board is that there are none.
Nobody has ever referred to street running in Cardiff city centre? Honestly? You...
Please name me any other tram or tram-train system in the UK where you are allowed to take full size bikes on board.
You obviously do not live or work in or anywhere near Cardiff and have no real life experience of the streets in and around Cardiff city centre, and have no real life experience...
I'm not happy about the splitting of through services between Barry and Pontypridd. And I'm not convinced that the tram-trains on Taff Valleys will provide the seats that passengers say they want. A 3 section tram-train will provide no more seats than a 2 car 150. 2 tram-trains doubled up will...
Maybe, but Carwyn Jones was quite explicit yesterday at FMQs that the new operator will not be allowed to curtail services early, or run fast through stations to make up time, or cancel services altogether due to late running.
That does pose Qs though of how in times of major disruption, the...
It doesn't look like the Pontypridd bay platform will get any use, with everything terminating at the heads of the valleys. The service pattern outlined is described as all day, every day Monday - Saturday, so I assume that means in the evenings as well.
I still can't quite work out if the Taff...
Carwyn did mention at FMQs this afternoon that there will be a "dedicated bus link to Cardiff Airport no later than January 2024", although I can't remember him specifying whether it will be from Rhoose or Barry.
Although a dedicated bus link operates from Rhoose to the airport already.
I see it as:
2tph Penarth - Coryton
2tph Penarth - Caerphilly
4tph Barry - Rhymney
1tph from Bridgend / Barry terminating at Central
As it clearly says on the presentation that all existing links to Central and Queen St will be maintained with passengers not having to change trains to cross...
I've read this from Skates' cabinet statement as HR standards being maintained up the 'Central Metro', tram-train operated lines:
"The Metro Vehicles will use a technology often referred to as Tram-Train. They will operate under Heavy Rail regulations on conventional railway, but will be...
I'm wondering if there will be tri-mode trains from Barry still going up the Taff Vale running on batteries, even if only as far as Radyr or Pontypridd.
As even http://www.keolisamey.cymru/news-and-media/keolisamey-unveils-ambitious-plans-for-wales-and-borders-network-and-south-wales-metro/ is...
From Ken Skates' statement today:
"The tri-modes trains will bring together three well proven technologies – diesel, batteries and 25kV electric traction (from renewable energy sources) – and builds on well-established bi-mode trains."...
I don't think we will see any widespread 'tram conversion' of the Valley lines, because as I quoted from Ken Skates statement today:
"The Metro Vehicles will use a technology often referred to as Tram-Train. They will operate under Heavy Rail regulations on conventional railway, but will be...
