I've been over Larpool Viaduct on the approach to Whitby. The one thing that really struck me and isn't obvious when you look at the viaduct from below from the train [on the Esk Valley], is that there's quite a rise/gradient across from one side of the Esk Valley to the other.
Over the years I've walked the "rail trail", the original Grosmont-Goathland-Summit line. The best way to do that is to get the train to Goathland and walk down the bank. In the process you can watch/see/hear the trains on the Deviation line along the other side of the valley as they go up the...
It was because most of the Moors is in the National Park that the former North Riding county council stumped up the cash to buy the track between the Summit near Goathland and Pickering. Which in turn the Moors bought using a mortgage style loan. As for the boundary of the National Park, as a...
Indeed the Pickering New Bridge Quarry to Rillington section survived for about a year after the Pickering-Grosmont section closed. It was operated along the lines of 3 times a week or as required, that is until the Quarry went over to road haulage for the stone. Also as I've mentioned on both...
Be intersting at a big/junction station, like say Newcastle Central or Carlisle Citidel. Which are both junction stations, witb trains from all over the place. What happens with regards to crew changes they usually happen at such stations. It wouldn't IMO be such a prblem at a lesser statio like...
Yes that was the original plan, The Lad. The Preservation Society as was, planned to buy the trak from Grosmont to the Summit and the trackbed from there to Pickering.....But the North Rding stepped in and bought the Summit-Pickering and in turn sold it to the NYMR in the same way as folk buy a...
One of the biggest if not the biggest problems is/was that Rillington Station had closed before WW2 and the platforms demolished/removed. So unlike at Grosmont which when preserved had 3 platforms [now 4]. With platform 1 being on the Esk Valley and Platforms 2+3 being used by the NYMR. So back...
This the short by the late Frank Dean the screen shot comes from. I posted it to the unoffical NYMR forum a few years ago,

Only between Levisham and Pickering New Bridge. The rest all the way from Pickering to Rillington [on the York-Scarborough line] and north from Levisham to Whitby Town were double track. The section Grosmont-Whitby was until the eighties. Sections of the line from Grosmont to Middlesbrough were...
One of the things I really like/love about Tanfield's carriage fleet, is the way they've restored them. Taking into account the "style" of operations they're portraying that of an industrial line/outfit. The fleet has been mostly restored with a "freelance" interior, some with compartments...
The Castle Keep of the "Newcastle" in Newcastle upon Tyne. The ECML passes literally inches/feet from the Keep on the North side and the "Old Mainline" over the High Level on it's west side, as it head south over the Tyne. St Hilda's Abbey in Whitby.
P.s. You beat me to it Cricketer 8for9...
What would I fix.-
1] Selective reopening of some lines. Better more appropriate facilities and/or new stations [building replacements for those closed or completely new ones at town/cities that didn't have one in the past. [At one time I'd said all closed lines, but not these days as some...
Out of interest at the end of the north bound [towards Grosmont] platform of Goathland/Aidensfield/Hogsmead station, on the NYMR. There is a little square black with white edging sign with a white capital B on it, beside the viewing area on the station approach. That indicts to the crews that...
For there's a trio. Big stations the afore mentioned Newcastle Central with York in second place. Small stations, Pickering on the NYMR, especially since it's had the original style roof restored. somewhat surprisingly the smoke from the steamers escape quite quickly.
There is/was one at Heaton Carriage sidings adjacent to the East Coast Mainline. It was used IIRC to turn HST power cars when they were based there. These days Heaton is used by Northern Rail and house their fleet of 158s.......
Rather than using one of the surviving class 40s. This could perhaps have been an ideal project the now scrapped remains of 45015. Principally the frames and running gear. Depending of course on what sort of state they were in, other than rusted beyond use and little more than scrap..... Just a...
The NYMRs class 25 "Sybilla" is mainline passed and used on the Esk Valley tween Grosmont and Whitby. In recent years they've also use/hired in a pair of class 20s one in BR blue the other in full blown London Transport/Metropolitan maroon.
