Could Shap and Beattock summits have been bypassed?

Oh yes I'm aware of that, I should've elaborated more on what I meant, sorry! And thanks for the answer :)

Could Shap and Beattock summits have been bypassed?

I know this can't be quantified but surely there would be further time benefits from freeing up capacity, particularly through generalised journey time if there's less need for flighting?

Trivia: Non-consecutive stations on the same line named after the same place

Ah yes I see that now, thanks! That's an enormous detour the river takes, from zooming in to Stoke I assumed it wound its way down to the Severn!

Trivia: Non-consecutive stations on the same line named after the same place

How are we defining "place"? Could I cite the River Exe as the namesake of Exeter St David's/Exeter Central and Exmouth? 1662246169 A couple more suggestions: Once Ripple Road opens as an intermediate station, Barking and Barking Riverside will qualify. Does anyone know if there's a...

    Potential Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton upgrade

I'm not sure this framing whereby WSMR "took on" the service is accurate. To me it implies a DfT-specified franchise with certain service obligations. As I understood it, they were an Open Access Operator and therefore proposed services to the DfT themselves. Yes, the DfT (or should that be ORR...

    Electrification "workstream"

    There's also been GOBLIN electrification!

    Transit map of London

Ah thanks! I looked along the edges but couldn't find it!

    Transit map of London

Impressive! Is there a key to explain the different line styles for buses? I've gathered that "open tramlines" means hail-and-ride, but what does a dashed line indicate?

There are too many preserved railways in the UK: what can be done to make them more viable?

I very much enjoyed riding on a pacer at the Aln Valley Railway earlier this year! To be fair though, that's probably because I'd never actually been on one before. I imagine someone who commuted on them only a few years ago would have a very different reaction!

    Longest bus route in England?

So if 50km is the limit for a registered route, what is the closest a route/route segment comes to 50km?

Trivia : Examples of orbital bus routes in the UK

I'm not sure how these routes are organised these days but the common section of the 253/254 from Holloway to Hackney seems pretty orbital to me. I'd even argue that if you ignore Euston-Camden and Aldgate-Whitechapel, the Camden-Whitechapel route is a successful northeast quarter of an inner...

Did the Midland/LMS/BR ever run Leeds-Barrow through service? Would it be worth it today?

Have I misunderstood this or did you mean to type Manchester-Windermere-Oxenholme-Windermere-Manchester?

Trivia: Stations still known by old names

Wasn't the square-like area by the station known as the Haymarket, similarly to the Grassmarket to its southeast?

    Edinburgh Tram developments

I wonder if a one-way system for the tram could be workable through Newington? You have St Leonard's Street/Dalkeith Road and Causewayside running parallel to the main road on either side.

    Suggestion for Metropolitan Line extension

A few quibbles: - It's likely that the use of HS2 as an OOC-Euston shuttle will be heavily discouraged, if not prohibited. - The H&C also has the purpose of linking large parts of inner West London to the Marylebone/Euston/City Roads and the several mainline terminals there. Areas like...

Would GBR fare differentiation on intercity / regional / local fares follow DB / JR model

If anything it appears to me that France is more rigid about this than the UK. It seems like invariably there a stopper will cover the inner stations, and the next fastest service is (in the inbound direction) all stops until the stopper's outer terminus then non-stop into the main terminal.

Trivia: Examples of avoiding lines used by (in service) passenger trains to bypass a major station...

Would Carstairs count? (Not a major station but certainly a major location!)

Trivia: Split-level stations on the National Rail network

Some Crossrail stations have already been mentioned, but the full list is: Paddington Moorgate(?)* Liverpool Street* Whitechapel * Depends on how you count the complex. Are Moorgate (Northern City) and Liverpool Street (Crossrail) different stations which just happen to be connected? Or could...

Barking Riverside Extension (London Overground) Updates

The only other option I can see is a shuttle to Barking, as I imagine the majority of GOBLIN passengers from Riverside will get off there anyway. I presume there's no existing spare platform/pathing capacity nor any plans to create that capacity?

Barking Riverside Extension (London Overground) Updates

Unless they would foul a junction, I really don't see an issue with trains longer than the platform at Gospel Oak, even if they're longer by multiple carriage-lengths. Given the trains are fully walkthrough and it's a terminus station, passengers can just walk along the train to board/exit. Only...
