The most likely reason for such a diversion would be retention of route knowledge for diversions. Many regular services have one or two a day that take an alternate route to maintain crew knowledge. Virgin services on the Northampton loop being a prime example.
Has to be Waterloo to Clapham Junction, busiest British Station to busiest London Terminal. Over 30 an hour from what I can work out from National Rail Website.
DVT's still need maintenance and can fail so stock needs some kind of slack in availability for exams and unplanned repair work. Three sets screams two out of three in service daily, unfortunately as with any micro fleet, stock utilisation will not be great.
I have finally gotten around to reading this weeks Railway Herald and it confirms that Virgin is reducing it's 57 fleet further but does anyone know which loco's they will be left with once they go down to a fleet of 7?
Does CrossCountry to Birmingham New Street still count from Haymarket or is CrossCountry only hourly to Edinbough?
Damn just checked two hourly, therefore I'll take Scotrail to Glasgow Queen Street
I wasn't aware there were any MkIII's still in Virgin livery that were in anywhere near useable condition. There were a few knocking around Long Marston but I'm not sure if any are still there.
Having pick up only northbound and set down southbound for stations like Luton, Stevenage etc would make sense, keep the long distance services for longer distance passengers. That system works well for Milton Keynes and Watford on West Coast.
I have been wondering about the formations of these trains with EMT. They currently have six seven-car trains, four four-car trains and seventeen five-car trains. Wouldn't it be easier to diagram if they took two cars out of two of the seven car trains and distributed them between the four car...
I doubt they would manage their thunderbird duties with a fleet that small until the ATW ones return, how ever once they get those four back I would say that's a sensible way to save costs.
