The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

I'm still not sure that I've made my question clear - is the employer subsidy for the "older" pension greater and is differential pay based upon pension permitted by the inion? If that's the case, then the newer workers are to an extent subsidising the older ones because they are getting less...

Is it bad for preserved DMUs to not use certain gears?

Thanks all - above consensus is reassuring when it comes to classic first gen DMUs. How about sprinters/pacers - just starting to enter preservation now - where it's more complicated and we're talking generally from my understanding a torque converter with lockup - but the lockup now never...

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

What I'm getting is that is that to put a "newbie" on a comparable pacakage they surely ought to be paid a higher headline wage. My intuition is that this would not be acceptable to the unions but I could be completely wrong - do you see the question I'm asking yet? (And if I'm right about this...

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

So it's acceptable to the unions to give someone (at the same grade) on the new pension scheme a higher headline wage than someone on the old pension scheme? If so then fair enough.

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

Re: us personally - these are not valid objections as they are very much covered, I've loads of critical illness and life insurance cover. What I don't have though - and it's a very valid point - is something where I lose my job. I need to be slightly careful what I say here cause I'm fairly...

Chance of Class 91 running to Newcastle today?

That's what the train manager's announcements (which I remember thinking were unusually good but can't remember specifically why) were to the effect of, but a lot less luggage space.

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

And this is a good enough reason to create a society where two person households need both to work (with the resulting implication that single person households need to earn a better wage to do as well given the economies of scale of the former)? While a bit of a digression, a dependant...

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

Well, re: Triple Lock you have either Restore or the Greens to choose from. Two extremists. Cause of sensible centrist parties finding it impossible to drop due to the boomer vote. Interest rates were so high because of inflation, which is roughly correlated with wage growth, so irrelevant...

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

I own my own house too. But a) I'm in a very fortunate position compared to most of my age group, a lot of it through luck b) I am not unlike many boomers doing things like objecting to every planning application for trivial reasons rather than working to lossen planning law, holding on to the...

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

Since it's almost 20 years ago now I think I can come clean and say it was the same for me when I was driving my own car (it was a now defunct company called delivery kings that worked in an odd way, a predecesor of just eat that had it not been managed by incompetents would be worth billions...

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

Yeah and indeed they advertise delivery jobs in the nearest one to me (Consett) claiming that they supply the mopeds. But if you actually apply - no they don't!

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

Neither as fun as moped pizza delivery, something I occasionally look at but (despite what the job ads say!) everywhere around here so far you have to supply your own moped and while I'd do it almost for free (did it as a summer job at uni and apart from the occasional robbery attempt it was...

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

There's a difference between making it so that in a two person household both can work and making it so that it's essential. Similar principle to e.g. working on weekends. (One of the best ways would be sorting out the universal credit taper which no one seems to have focussed on in the marginal...

Forced to pay fine in cash at London Liverpool Street

Bear in mind that if true then there are at least two employees in on it. A conspiracy of fraudulent gateline workers (should be easy to prove more offences) sounds a good job to me for BTP.

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

Yes, housing is a disgrace. Unfortunately for demographic reasons boomers are holding the country hostage so there's little that can be done about this unless they can be persuaded that perhaps not living in a steadily deteroriating places needs some give and take.

Bus services you think are useless.

It's quite fun that in this thread - apart from the Cambridge link-together-park-and-rides-slowly one - there is no service everyone agrees is useless!

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

What lack of freedom? Having done both we massively prefer it with me being the only earner, despite what is a fairly significant* financial hit. We only have to plan holidays around my leave, we don't have to worry (much) about childcare, there's a lot more time as a couple to do things...

Is it bad for preserved DMUs to not use certain gears?

It's hard to see how a classic DMU could use 3rd gear on a 25mph line (maybe you could change a little bit early but you've still got to keep it under load from my understanding and change into 4th to coast so how do you do 3rd without speeding?) or now that pacers/sprinters are being preserved...

TRIVIA: Can you get a really hard worked bus now?

Struggle is not quite how I'd put it! Basically I'm wanting a mechanical "show". Usually that show is going to come in the form of the engine being worked hard, yes (and ideally sounding and smelling nice). To use a rail analogy, I typically find ex-industrial or narrow gauge type heritage...
