I lived close to Wellingborough for a number of years, and hardly ever went to Northampton, and only then because they had a big B&Q (this was before Wellingborough got its own branch). Shopping etc was always to Milton Keynes - far more choice, less congestion and much easier to park.

That got me thinking - is it really better, since it does mean the station now needs two platforms? Having the passing places elsewhere means single platforms would be fine (and so cheaper)!

There must be some staff / signal issues because Lynn trains that should probably split at Ely divide at Cambridge instead, and follow each other up the line. The same happens in reverse, joining at Cambridge instead of Ely.

That and all the gold plated rules around level crossings, which means no extra services until they get replaced too. Ely could probably also do with some re-configuring south of the station to allow moves between platform 3 and the Soham line without touching the up main (for another thread).

We managed over 100 years with locomotives towing an extra vehicle to carry their fuel (tenders), so it would hardly be unprecedented.
