Thanks for that Gloster. I had not thought of axle weight. Its a shame they did not run to Newtown or Machynlleth As they are ideally sited to provide a rail freight terminal for mixed goods containers. There is no railfreight in mid Wales and it would take many lorries of the roads.

Does anyone know the loading gauge on the line from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli? From what I can tell is it changes at Newtown or Machynlleth I think it gets tighter from either of these 2 towns. I have not been able to find out if/where the gauge changes. ChiefPlanner it could happen. It could be done in stages, Stage 1 could be a short line to the east side of Chilwilog with a new station there. Then the route then could be Criccieth---Chilwilog---Penychain. Stage 2 in later years the line could be extended further north to Penygroes and so on...

The airport are objecting to the line going over there due to its height including overhead electrics. They say its going to cause problems with aircraft landing and taking off.

They are still arguing on how to put a line in there.

zwk there are no more paths through Castlefield so any more freight will not happen. Market forces drive investment only time will tell.

A cheaper solution would be to extend the Bala Lake Railway to Corwen and have a Corwen West station.

What is needed is a chord east of Dorchester south and Dorchester west. That will open routes to bristol - Bournemouth. Bournemouth - to the southwest when the chord is built at Yeovil Pen Mill.
