Northern Trainee Driver process (Another copper...)

I'm currently in talent pool for a trainee position. I'm currently working as a Paramedic, and there are many transferable skills from emergency service work into the railways. There is a podcast on Spotify about leaving Police into other industries and there is one specific about Police to...

GWR - Trainee Train Driver - Recruitment Discussion

I was about 13 months from application to getting to assessment centre. Then the process up to the end point is pretty quick

    Driver looking for career change...

Very true... I am excited to be given a start date in the future. However, also nervous for giving up what albeit is a stable job and income (providing I don't muck up). I think it's more fetching to me as the OP is at 10 years which is exactly where I am at. I'm hoping in 10 years I'll...

    Driver looking for career change...

My starting training salary would be less, but from year 1 onwards I would start to earn more... The shifts do seem to be all over the place within the railways, however, I don't feel it's any worse than what I currently have. I appreciate we don't have like a 04.02 start, however, we can be...

    Driver looking for career change...

This is an interesting read for someone waiting to come into the industry.. I'm at the 10 year point of my emergency service career, and the pay, conditions etc are no where near what the railway seems to offer, and almost seeing it with blinkers as a "retirement" from what I'm currently doing...

GWR - Trainee Train Driver - Recruitment Discussion

I'm sure I had video interview around August 2023 and had assessment in February 2024 with DMI completed by March.

Once a train driver can you relocate?

Thanks for that. Appreciate it. Glad you got to where you wanted to be, shame it took so long!

Once a train driver can you relocate?

Blimey! So guess they either stay, move toc or resign? Interesting.... (Although hope I get to start before that wave fully comes in :p) Do internal transfers take president over new starters? As in if they need drivers, would they take from talent pool before going to internal transfer...

Once a train driver can you relocate?

Ah I see! Although you would think there would still be a long term saving but not putting drivers through training... Am I right in saying it's a very high amount for the cost of one person to train up? 90k? So internal would be fine? But without keep moving around

Once a train driver can you relocate?

Thought that might be the case... Luckily there is no intention of moving. But, reassured that if it ever happened, there wouldn't be the risk of loosing job if for instance failing a "advanced" test that was never taken to originally get in. That's a shame. Any idea why?

Once a train driver can you relocate?

Sorry if this has been asked before, couldn't find answers in search function. As a train driver, is this something you can easily do in a new location I.e with a new TOC if your TOC doesn't cover new area of living? I have no plans to relocate, but you never know what the future may hold...

Does anyone know if the OPC have refreshed their tests?

I thought attempts before 2013 may have a possibility of being wiped... But I could be massively wrong on that

    Assessments & Medicals discussion

Hi All Thought I'd post in here rather than a new thread. Is there anyone who's recently started or done training as a trainee driver happy to have a private chat? It's not assessment/MMI/DMI related, more asking about course schedule. Would help to have a forward thinking/planning. Many...

Returning to work after a fatality??

First of, I'm sorry this happened to you. I can't imagine the pain and torture you must be going through. I'm glad to read that your TOC has been supportive, and as theironroad said, there will be much support from your railway family across the UK. I do feel this is a good read for those...

GWR - Trainee Train Driver - Recruitment Discussion

It could be months... No news is good news sometimes. The last round (2023) included a video interview (not a face-to-face) which came out the blue after being at depot manager stage for a while, then it was waiting more.
