Nothing to do with availability, it's due to the many more services operating than previous.
I believe a lot of the issue is for serious issues, it is MTU, the engine manufacturer who has to fix the engines.
Obviously they need booking in to fix them, and most likely not enough people to fix what needs fixing.
Not like motorways ever come to a stand due to accident, or planes are cancelled is it?
When was the last major infrastructure failure on the ECML? To be fair it seems to have been decent recently.
I seem to recall an article (can't find it) , that Freight liner were looking to rewrite the timings for electric hauled freight trains as they have not alter for many may years.
Increased speed generates better paths, and can increase utilisation of the wagons, therefore earning more money...
By doing any engineering work on the Saturday night gives them longer to do the work as services start later on a Sunday morning,
If this was done Sunday night there would be less time as services start a lot earlier on a Monday morning.
