Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Yes. Mystic Meg has been summoned to ascertain how far... There will be certain limitations already present - signalling, power supplies, geology etc, which will limit where the junction can be situated. Then a decision just needs to be made and electrification designed around that decision...

Network Rail draws up list of ‘no regret’ electrification schemes - New Civil Engineer

I've seen several presentations which say just that - in fact, they tend to be more efficient in slightly cloudy (non direct sunlight) conditions as there's less reflection and less thermal stress on the panels. They're also typically angled to deliver a broad output for most of the year in the...

3rd rail for some electrification projects

Third rail would have been even more problematic in the tunnel - I'd be surprised if you could make it through a week without it tripping, given how wet the tunnel is at track level.

Network Rail draws up list of ‘no regret’ electrification schemes - New Civil Engineer

I'm disappointed by the lack of solar going up on platform canopies and station roofing, with associated battery storage. It wouldn't take much to run lighting, PIS and some waiting room HVAC from solar with battery storage built into retaining walls and underneath seating - maybe have missed...

Network Rail draws up list of ‘no regret’ electrification schemes - New Civil Engineer

The industry will not waste that energy - that's where the hydrogen for the fuel cell trains will come from. Drax are also planning on putting in huge battery packs, 200MW or so initially, when they switch from coal to gas generation on part of their site.

3rd rail for some electrification projects

You don't half talk some utter nonsense. There's no conspiracy to deploy OLE where it's not appropriate. There's also not a 10x difference between OLE and third rail if you include the minor inconvenience of getting electricity into the OLE or third rail - you're forgetting that third rail...

3rd rail for some electrification projects

Truth. The track lowering that we often have to undertake in tunnels for electrification often takes the railhead level back to where it was when the tunnels were built, people tend to forget that most tunnels were built with quite a decent level of clearance to enable draughting in steam...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

It was always going to stop there - there is (or was, or will be, or might be, or could be) the issue of the HS2 connection to contend with. As Bald Rick says, it was never going to be electric trains just to Church Fenton - it is, at present, a nice little project to allow all bi-mode stock to...

Network Rail draws up list of ‘no regret’ electrification schemes - New Civil Engineer

There's not a massive difference between a Class 91 and a Class 801 (I believe it's 4,830kW for the locomotive v 4,520kW for the 9 car units) and I'd guess hotel demand is much the same, all in, taking into account more kit but better energy efficiency of that kit on the Hitachi. The northern...

You can process petrol or diesel into other things like methanol so it can be used in industrial solvents.

    Why is 55 002 a static exhibit?

Engines or locomotives ? The last engines have been removed from service with the Royal Navy, and there can be little more than a handful of Deltic engines in service in private applications, such as emergency pumping and power generation. Knowledge is only part of the issue, being able to...

Network Rail draws up list of ‘no regret’ electrification schemes - New Civil Engineer

Your point of order is sadly out of order. Moving from diesel traction to electric traction, even with 100% gas generated electricity will offer significant carbon savings though the increased energy density inherent to natural gas, which means you get more energy for each kg of CO2 produced...

Level crossing incident near Norwich new RAIB investigation

It was good thinking by those involved - think what the possible causes could be and mitigate them as quickly as possible. I'm pleased there wasn't some of the more recent "we'll cancel everything on safety grounds and wait for RAIB to tell us" thinking, or the really old BR-era thinking of...

Could the Chat Moss line be upgraded?

Borrow mine, I've 12 you can have. Don't know where these extra couple have come from, mind you. Must ask round the office.

Could the Chat Moss line be upgraded?

I knew you would know. Could you do a very rough cost estimate, so we can do the £x million per second saved sums.

Could the Chat Moss line be upgraded?

And how many seconds does 5mph save you ? How much to upgrade the signalling to allow 100mph ?

CP6 funding cut by £1Bn: Where should the cutbacks occur?

Western Rail Access to Heathrow is a bit pointless until a decision is made on further electrification to Oxford and beyond, to be fair. It's in a slightly odd place where it would be nice and would get a reasonable amount of use from the Cardiff-Bristol-Reading axis.

I very much wish Neil from OOC was here to enjoy this schadenfreude.

    Pendolinos and WCML at 140.

If memory serves (and this is very vague), the only 140mph capable TASS software version number was designed for the 8 car Pendolinos, they never bothered with 140mph compliant TASS software for the 9s and 11s. Oh, and you'll need to do something with the OLE. It's not all 140mph compliant as...
