GPS, and particularly differential GPS will help with geolocation, but assuming they know where they put them that may not matter too much. Getting the signal 'back to base' isn't helped by GPS, so they would need another method such as cellular data 'dalekmaybe via GSM-R?

Are Northern doing a crafty switch to battery operated EMUs, or did someone in marketing not like trains as a kid?
It's unlikely that anyone that lives in property joining the railway bought it before the railway was constructed. If they find the railway to be unacceptably noisy or disruptive, perhaps they should given this suitable consideration before taking up residence?
