Oh yes, forgot that you can only get your bus pass when you reach 64¾ , or where-ever its got up to now. So my suggestion is even better for those in the twilight zone between 60 and the current bus pass eligibility age, as a senior railcard allows discounted bus travel.

It's also worth knowing that you get your Senior Railcard discount on Plus-bus tickets, too. So if you are arriving at your rail destination before 09:30 , and have an onward bus journey to make before the free bus pass kicks in, the discounted plus-bus can often be the cheapest way of doing this.

I have just had a look at the route for that Retro Shakespearian Tug. It obviously took the "sensible" route from Stalybridge to Stockport outbound, but can't understand why on the return it went all round the houses via Philips Park. Or was this for the track-bashing fraternity?

Would they not have been quicker getting a bus to Stockport, then train(s) from there to Poulton? From my very limited experience of the Airport trams, only a masochist would consciously subject themselves to the rather pedestrian pace on this route. It feels like one is going round in circles...

I'd also recommend the Millennium Walkway and the Torrs at New Mills well worth a look, if you want to do something outdoors. With a Wayfarer ticket, you can come up to New Mills on the "Wessie" (Buxton Line) to Newtown station, walk down Albion Road towards the town, then Left onto Wirksmoor...

In fact, the opposite is true, the very curved line from the Midland Route up into "Donaroo" sidings (currently Buxton Headshunt) is quite a steep climb, plus the original route into the Midland Station went under the Ashbourne branch from the LNWR station means that it is virtually impossible...

I think the idea of using a GM Wayfarer, and going Liverpool-Warrington-Piccadilly-Buxton , then the hourly 58 bus over the Cat & Fiddle to Macclesfield, and returning home from there is a damn good idea. Loads of stuff to see in Buxton - Pavilion Gardens, Museum, etc, and being a bit touristy...
