Very interesting, thanks for that. Looks like some kind of transitional state between Heaton Norris and the now Edgeley+Heald Green setup. And perhaps a perhaps a transitional state between Tamworth getting one of its transformers replaced.
I hadn't previously heard of Milford & Brocton, or...
It definitely seems like the longest gap in substations for the central area. I'm surprised it can keep up with the power demand since I think the City branch has a slightly more intensive service than the Charing Cross branch (22tph vs 20).
The substation distances in general are a bit...
What I think I know is is:
- The HEX system was normally fed by Hayes 66/25kV
- OOC No.1 FS (controlled by Rugby) received a 25kV BR owned interconnector from Acton Ln FS allowing power to be shared from one of the two WCML supplies.
- OOC No. 1 FS also received a different and separate 25kV...
I found an interesting article in the Railway Gazette of substation renewal work in the 1950s-60s available on the Internet Archive (as many Railway Gazette issues are). Volume 115, Issue 20, 17th Nov, 1961, p573
The main objective was replacing motor generators with rectifiers and substations...
Thanks for this, makes sense now I think about it although it does look like a much more substantial installation than the other DC substations on the WLL (Olympia, Chelsea). Nonetheless, UKPN open data insists that they still operate a 26.5MVA 132/25kV transformer connected to a "North Pole...
On every link I click on associated with that facebook group, I'm entirely blocked from seeing anything. Interesting if I'm the person for whom this is the case. However, I can sort of view content on that group by way of google images so it's probably this picture? (Shame because I'm sure the...
In searching around this topic I found this document floating around in reference to the redevelopment of Lille Bridge depot from at the earliest May 2011 that mentions "139 Long Acre power control centre or Palestra" sort of implying "whichever is correct when you read this".
I also found out...
I had wondered where London Underground power control was located, I'd heard mentions of Coburg Street as well as this mysterious building at the north end of Cromwell Curve.
But in the end, the right answer was "Long Acre" which I had seen mentioned as LPTB's electrical control room during the...
Sometime ago I was chatting to a signaller at Manchester ROC who seemed to suggest there was some black space in the building earmarked for Crewe ECR but they had refused to move over.
I think this is also true for Derby ROC and Sandhills IECC. Maybe this was also the case for York IECC when they had signallers there. I get the impression that for Romford, and Rugby/Manchester/York roc they are actually in different rooms. In any case I imagine people just phone each other up...
I see, not very many ECRs seem to have gone over ROCs. Maybe only Romford at this point. Derby and Didcot started out life in in an ROC of course. York still doesn't seem to have moved over yet as I found this contract posted online about moving the ECR, the work for which is said to be...
And here it is. A great watch, and the only images of the inside of Rugby ECR I've ever seen. Although I assume it became a lot more computerised even before it moved into the ROC. Also mentioned is that the boundaries of control. Reading between the lines I think they're saying the boundary...
Did some googling and I think it's "Rugby District Electric Depot", built to support loco changes and possibly and EMU service at Rugby for a short while when wires had only reached that far. I think from the north so trains to London would be switching to diesel at Rugby from November 1964...
Yeah I feel Scotland is really acting like a huge pilot scheme for serious discontinuous operation. Core Valley Lines battery trains are off wires for about 5 miles max. So Fife Circle is like a different order of magnitude. Even orders of much less experimental fleets can simply take years to...
I see, that explains why at least one damper pair I've observed has been removed (Ditton TSC).
I hadn't actually made any particular notes of smaller equipment within TSC sites (some would surely be for the substation's own LV needs), only really the boxes on podiums which I had assumed where a...
Any chance of a screenshot, I don't think any of us can view this unless we apply to enter the group its from (not that the denied screen tells us what group To join!)
I know what you mean! I've been slowly collecting all the insights across the forum on this topic and physically locating them into a rather unwieldly Google Earth project! Finally getting the picture in one place.
Can you (or anyone!) tell me a little more about them? What they do/what problem they addressed?
Were they another part of WCRM that was carried into the NR PSU? Their rollout is quite prolific.
