Just how are the systems communicating with each other then, via HTTP on web services hosted on a mini windows PC running IIS?! How can it take the reported 5 seconds (I read elsewhere here) for the commands to work their way down given one of the usual advantages of computers is their high speed!?
Utterly off topic but yup, agree 100% as anyone who recalls Arriva's disasterous (and short lived) tenure as franchised bus operator in Malta will know - for mainly cost reasons they opted to buy a fleet of King Long buses (about half the cost of equivalent British-made buses) and the...
Bantamzen, I'm with you there. On Saturday I did try to reason with a cross passenger (like me he was waiting for the 9:29am to Euston) and explained that it just takes time for *any* new rolling stock to bed in and problems are just to be expected for the first year or so. Though it pre-dates...
Yup that makes sense to me. The software systems in modern passenger planes are clearly there for very good reasons and - mostly - make the planes much safer than they otherwise would be (the 737MAX being an obvious and tragic exception). I've always felt totally comfortable flying on an airbus...
While I know little about trains, I am a software engineer and can't help but think that all sounds a little like technology for the sake of it. Software should only exist and be used to solve problems, not create them. What was the problem the software controlling the wipers was meant to be...
My wife and I were on the 1930 London Euston service going to Wigan last night (it departed around 2025), we ended up being told iniitally the train was going to terminate a Birmingham by the time we reached (and stayed for the best part of an hour at) Rugby then eventually as we got underway...
195 issues continue, I was waiting for the 0929 VT service to Euston at Wigan NW yesterday morning. 195120 on the 0923 service inbound from Barrow turns up a few minutes late and instead of getting on its way quickly sits there for a few minutes before the inevitable PA announcement that is has...
And many other bodily secretions too - some of the seats on the unrefurbished units are an absolute indictment of the poor standards of cleaning by Northern!
*Yes I do actually know what it's referring to, before anyone feels the need to correct/clarify for me! :)
Did a round trip yesterday from Wigan to Hadfield so naturally had two trips on cl.323s, this being my first significant journey on a 323 in several years. I have to agree with others here who note the poor, tired state of them. Absolutely these need a refurb and repair works: toilets either out...
Sorry to wake this one up, but since no one did fully ID the bus, it's a Wright Pulsar Gemini on a VDL DB250LF chassis, originally new to Arriva London.
Yes in the last decade or so under the Southern franchise, certainly. Under Connex however, oh dear, I think whoever ran them went on to teach Arriva Rail North how to care for trains...
Yes indeed. I grew up and lived in SE London until 2005, the "Kent link" networker services being very familiar to me. The state those trains got into and were allowed to get into was terrible, extensive vandalism, I hope they've improved since and at least now all have CCTV I think, sorely...
I also agree with the general comments about the undiffused lighting on the 150s. Nothing says tarted up on the cheap, nearly life-expired, smelly, noisy old BR diesel stock than undiffused lighting. Coudn't they have spent just a little bit more and done something with the lights. Heck, the...
I haven't but I think I know what you mean. OT but too many bus designs have internal seating layouts designed for either kids or people with no legs. Given I have a car, I rarely use buses but dread it when I do. My local route here is actually an Arriva-run service where, for once, the buses...
OT but I think this might actually not be the fault of CAF but National Rail, I think those PIS units are taking data from their API feeds. This year I've been "playing" with National Rail's Darwin web services APIs to construct a prototype combined multi-station "departure board" web SPA (I'm a...
