    Haymarket to Dalmeny electrification

You can't go as far as Perth until the station is remodelled. The layout currently doesn't work for electrification, from a signalling and track perspective. The station itself needs a full rebuild, which will happen before electrification.

    Haymarket to Dalmeny electrification

You can't electrify north of Dunblane though. If you did that, you'd end up electrifying as far as Hilton Jn, and it would be used by two train per day; the up and down Highland Chieftan.

Open air stations with tunnels at both ends of platform(s) (Trivia)

It's actually surprisingly simple. The original Stobcross station had two platforms, with two running lines between. In this map, courtesy of the NLS, we see Stobcross station at the bottom right, with the tracks leading directly into a tunnel at the north of the station. That tunnel is still...

West Lothian Council becomes co-promoter of new railway station for Winchburgh

It's a bit more complex, but yes, there is that risk. The modelled demand for services in and out of Edinburgh is mad. Prior to COVID, we were modelling Waverley at reaching 42m pax per annum by about 2040. Obviously, that number has changed a little, but in some ways it's worse: numbers are...

West Lothian Council becomes co-promoter of new railway station for Winchburgh

So this is a screenshot from the West Lothian Winchburgh New Town Master plan document. The existing housing, as of about five years ago, before construction started in earnest, can be seen at the bottom centre of the image. The new housing, most of which has already been built, can be seen in...

Lumo Expansion - FirstGroup make further applications

The line in the press release, "Stirling has a large catchment area, with an estimated three million people living within an hour's drive" really tells you everything you need to know. It does a bit seem like they're clutching at straws.

    Fife Line(s) Capacity

To shed some light onto wiring plans:

    Fife Line(s) Capacity

I do actually have the long term demand forecasting for the Fife lines lying around somewhere, and it basically says that about 70% of the cumulative demand from all stations in Fife to stations out of Fife was to just two destinations: Haymarket and Waverley. Add in Dundee and Perth and you...

ScotRail Suburban Fleet (EMU and BEMU) Market Engagement

Also it wasn't an invitation to tender, it was only a market engagement. It's basically free for companies to send a document outlining what they could offer, and so more companies will send in an email. In comparison, a proper tender will be very expensive and there will not be anywhere near...

ScotRail Suburban Fleet (EMU and BEMU) Market Engagement

I would like to clarify, just in case people are confused, ScotRail are categorically NOT accepting or investigating the possibility of using the 350s. A leasing company offered ScotRail in the market engagement, the possibility of using existing surplus British EMUs, with battery packs and a...

Technical issues with battery equipped passenger rolling stock manufactured by Alstom.

Regards the Dublin issue, which is most definitely the DART and not the LUAS, my mistake, I think most of the information is coming out of the inquiry that's ongoing. There have been sporadic press releases, however I am definitely not on top of everything that's been said, and no doubt there...

ScotRail Suburban Fleet (EMU and BEMU) Market Engagement

From what I gather, the answer to that was a firm four letter word...

ScotRail Suburban Fleet (EMU and BEMU) Market Engagement

Can now confirm that over twenty different companies expressed an interest, including at least one company offering to explore a battery retrofit of an existing UK EMU. I am assuming those would be the 350/2s, simply by process of elimination. The expected number of expressions of interest was...

Great Northern - Northern City Line to TFL?

It's happening. The reasons that such benefits haven't materialised so far are not part of my responsibilities, not knowledge. Instead, I can only relay the business case as it has been put forward. Any complaints about the lack of any movement under GTR, before or after nationalisation, can...

Great Northern - Northern City Line to TFL?

The gap is for two reasons, the first operational, the second infrastructure related. Operationally, GN need time to completely separate out the crew working arrangements, as well as stabling and staffing of stations. That will take at least two timetable changes to bed in, from the point that...

Great Northern - Northern City Line to TFL?

So, as an actual update, and to stop this becoming another speculative decision, I'm copying over a message from the original threat.

    North London improvement ideas?

As a real life update to this threat, which may indeed warrant a new threat entirely, I can confirm that the business case to transfer operation of the Northern City Line (including ownership of the tunnel section south from Drayton Park) into TfL was submitted at the end of September this year...

Re-opening rail line to St Andrews rejected by Scottish Government

The current best estimate for Peterhead and Fraserburgh is on the wrong side of £1.2bn

Re-opening rail line to St Andrews rejected by Scottish Government

If you're asking why people fantasise about reopening, it's because there was a line there once, and almost every closed line has an active campaign to reopen. If you're asking why it's a fantasy, it's because there's a big lot of nothing right where the railway is supposed to go. One of the...
