Sounds rather cosy :D
I don't recall ever actually travelling in a compartment, on a scheduled service (whether corridor or non-corridor). Although I'm in my late 40s I suppose that I happened to have mainly lived in areas where they didn't get used much.
I've only travelled in...
Thank you everyone for the plethora of information, helpful as always.
I was thinking about those carriages where you were confined to a single compartment, typically seating 4 or more passengers per row in two facing rows.
From the reading I had done, I'm aware that corridors could be a...
Hi
I was watching a documentary about the 1864 murder of Thomas Briggs in east London. A major factor of this case was non-corridor stock where a victim and his attacker were isolated in a single compartment.
I believe non-corridor stock was immediately seen as scary, and there were calls to...
Yes Cardiff's a very unbalanced city it terms of its railways.
On one hand you've got perhaps the most concentrated line of stations in the UK between Coryton and Heath (6 stations in 2.5 miles). Also possibly the shortest heavy rail branch line (Queen St to Bute Road - still not happy...
OK, I'll take your word that the business park will generate enough traffic to
worsen the congestion at J33. I rarely drive around Cardiff when it's busy so don't really have any first hand experience of how traffic has increased in the 25 years since I lived there.
Ah I see, I hadn't...
It shouldn't really be that difficult a concept for Americans should it?
I mean if they went along to a transport hub in New York would they just ask for Washington (if they wanted to go to Washington Square North) and be surprised to arrive in Washington DC or somewhere near Seattle? Or...
Is this route quicker or slower than going via J32 and A470 into the centre? I don't know how congested either route is these days.
Is the business park big enough to have that much effect on the junction? Having said that there must be other places near Cardiff (like Miskin) which either...
Fair enough. These days I don't need to make long early morning train journeys very often, but I'm sure that when I did in the past, I would have a hot drink before leaving home, or failing that at the local station. If the station didn't have facilities I would wait until my destination.
Wow. We're so far apart as to what the priorities of our courts should be that it's pointless even carrying on with the discussion.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question though
Not defending such short notice of job losses if that's true, but how many Southern routes actually had catering (in 1st class or elsewhere) and are affected by this? Aren't most of their routes quite short (around 1 hour) so maybe already without catering.
Sorry, but can you step through this please. How can punishment not be exactly what a court sentence is, let alone it being drivel.
I'm completely at a loss to understand what you're talking about
I know I'm veering off topic so I'll keep it short. Walked Bakewell to Buxton a few weeks ago along this route. Very beautiful, the views from the railway viaducts of the river and dale were spectacular, the reopened tunnels very atmospheric. As a pedestrian the last couple of miles along the A6...
Coming to this thread late...
I recall having very similar thoughts to these many years ago.
1. As a former commuter from Coryton to Queen Street it seemed peculiar that you had possible the densest cluster of stations in the country (5 stations in 1.5 miles on the same line, then a short...
Because the Advance ticket is only valid if you had actually gone all the way from A to Z. If you alighted at Llandudno Junction and presented the ticket valid from the station immediately before (the -1) , you wouldn't have anything to show how you traveled to the -1 station*
* Clearly I'm...
Maps generally, rather than anything specifically railway related?
I'm sure I've got a box of 1960/70s 1 inch and 50k OS maps, and plenty of reprints of earlier ones. But these are still so common that I don't even think of them as being old.
But if the stations cost more to operate than they generated revenue (through passengers travelling from, or to) how secure would be their future?
I don't know these stations in particular, so whether there would be extensive and costly closure procedures, or some other reason (e.g. covenant...
Any idea why it is these three cities that do this?
Living in Solihull and having worked extensively in London, I'm very familiar with the Euston scrum and it's slightly more genteel Marylebone cousin. I didn't know it was also common in Glasgow and Edinburgh - I don't think I've visited...
Thanks for the advice. Like many people I don't have any real experience in finding and interpreting legal documents. I haven't been able to spend very much time so far, so I've read what I can for now.
I'm not sure what all the relevant Acts are, but I've had look at the Railways Act 2005...
+1 on this point.
If it were me I'd like to enjoy the scenery, linger, enjoy another pint and move on as and when either I (or travelling companion) wanted to. Worrying about late running trains which could miss your onward connection and throw out the whole timetable sounds a bit stressful...
But wouldn't each of the single tickets allow a break of journey anyway. I can't actually work out if that is the same as, or more flexible than a return because I lose track of which types of return allow you to break journeys on outward and inward legs (too many ticket types, too many...
