Why such relatively low ridership on the AVE?

It doesn't help that unemployment is 20%, double that of France. Also how commercially focused is the AVE? Do they often have good deals, advance fares, railcards, and the like? At least SNCF have experimented with the likes of OuiGo, knowing they have to be competitive. It also appears that...

    Given up on Eurostar

To be honest I wasn't being serious, and didn't expect this kind of backlash! If its a similar price to take a train from the UK to France, Germany, Benelux then I would certainly consider. It has only been the case once though.

    Given up on Eurostar

It does indeed, so why the actual Eurostar site doesn't I don't know. Loco2 doesn't include French railcards annoyingly, as I have a Carte Jeune also, but from my searching it's not cheaper to split tickets with SNCF anyway.

    Given up on Eurostar

Train is always best choice! Just often not cheapest if the journey goes further than London to Paris/Brussels. Sadly, it's difficult to find a deal that competes with airlines when the starting station is not London. The Eurostar should take into account railcard held, as quite often it's...

    Penrith to Keswick

I guess I'll have to eat my words partly on that one. But I retain my point on the psychology aspect, the patronage of Borders rail demonstrated from its higher than forecast numbers people who won't use the bus may well flock to the train, which has also been the case for other reopenings. Also...

    Penrith to Keswick

I think there's a lot of psychological factors that are involved that bus use statistics may not indicate, in determining if a train line would be successful. Presumably the Borders railway has a lot more patronage than the bus service has ever had, while 'bus-stitution' after the Beaching cuts...

    Penrith to Keswick

By the sounds of it then, with the amount of single tracked line and speed restrictions on the Cumbria Coast, money is better spent on upgrading the existing line significantly, if the line allowed the Sprinter's to go at their top speed of 75mph then the Barrow-Carlisle route could possibly...

Why are TOC's still allowed to use Pacers and Sprinters?

Sorry, I should've specified, the mainline SNCF network so not the Transition SNCF suburban service. They are not comfortable.

Why are TOC's still allowed to use Pacers and Sprinters?

The oldest trains on France, operating under the Intercité label and from 1975, are a lot more comfortable than a majority of trains in the UK. However, that would not be a fair comparison. Even though they run on the classic lines, they were built as luxurious intercity trains, a fairer...

    Penrith to Keswick

I have read that its would be £120m for Penrith-Keswick, so to have the whole route reopened, let's just say it would be £500m, that's 5% of Moorside's proposed cost of £10bn. Opening the whole route is of course the only thing of interest for nuclear freight, not much use if it stops at...

    Penrith to Keswick

It also appears to be quicker to get from Workington to Penrith via train going via Carlisle, than a bus spanning the A66. Not sure how much quicker a direct train would be. As much as it would be nice to see reopened, difficult to see a campaign group raising the funds for the Penrith...

    Penrith to Keswick

According to local news, campaigners are anticipating that the new Moorside power station will give impetus to reinstate the whole Workington-Penrith link, as significant infrastructure improvements will be required in West Cumbria. It'd certainly be interesting to see what would come of it, as...

    Furness Line post franchise change

Looks like there's going to be 4 trains going to Barrow from Manchester following the timetable changes in May, with only the last train going from the airport and in a class 185 (as this is the only train with a first class offering).
