Does the media go out if its way to portray the railway negatively?

The papers were full of the life stories of the four killed at Hatfield. When it is raised I generally ask what people think of the Nuneaton accident which happened a few weeks later and in which five people were killed. Most people don't have any idea of what I am referring to because it...

Does the media go out if its way to portray the railway negatively?

Journalists fall back on cliches on all topics. People travelling on trains are labelled 'commuters' wherever they are and whatever the purpose of their journey. Individuals are hard done by, even when they are the cause of their misfortune, and individuals are always treated as truth-telling...

Latest ORR figures - Railway expenditure per passenger km

An interesting detail in table 2.15 The subsidy per passenger journey on the Caledonian Sleeper is £92.30 However those journeys are relatively long (400 miles upwards) so the subsidy per km is a mere 14p, lower than Scotrail, Wales, Merserside and Northern, but way above the 5p/km GB average.

    Another wicked bridge!

The way that the report says that the top of the bus was "torn off by the bridge" is a bit harsh. The bridge was stationary, and minding its own business at the time.

Were there really 300 on the train? It sound like a lot for pre-6 a.m.

Could a large increase in electric car adoption lead to a viable Motorail service rev

Not sure about your logic. Suppose we have the same number of electric vehicles of same size and weight of current vehicles doing the same speed. We will need the same amount of power at the tyre. The difference is how that energy is created and deployed. Electric motors may be 75%...

Could a large increase in electric car adoption lead to a viable Motorail service rev

I agree with all that, except battery capacity is measured in kWh (kilowatt-hours) not kW. A kW is a flowrate of electricity applicable to charging rates, and power usage rates, a kWh is an amount of electrical power, e.g. how much a battery can store...

    Crossrail operating costs/profit

These 200 million journeys are not all new business. Much is diverted from other routes, e.g. Central line.

    Cardiff - Swansea Electrification Cancelled!

Yes, that's true, but Plymouth and Wakefield have a hinterland too. My point is that just because Swansea is the second largest town in Wales it does not make it special or put it in the same league as Glasgow or Birmingham.

    Cardiff - Swansea Electrification Cancelled!

Being a 'second city' is meaningless. Swansea has a smaller population than Plymouth, which is way down the list of English city populations. Cardiff has a smaller population than Wakefield. http://www.citymayors.com/gratis/uk_topcities.html

Is Transport Focus a waste of money?

I have always thought that Transport Focus dealt in platitudes and statements of the Bl****g Obvious. One of their dafter recent statements was to compare various routes on the 'Pounds per minute' basis, and to claim that some lines were expensive because their fares measured in £/min were...

New South Western franchise: Awarded to First/MTR

The problem on the Waterloo - Exeter line isn't the stock. 159's are OK for the route. The problem is that the existing loops west of Salisbury determine the frequency, and works on the basis that all trains will stop at virtually all stations, and the last train west of Yeovil leaves Waterloo...

New South Western franchise: Awarded to First/MTR

No mention of a later last departure from Waterloo to EXD, 20.20 is by far the earliest 'last train' to anywhere south of the Thames.

New South Western franchise: Awarded to First/MTR

Worth mentioning that the ownership is First 70%, MTR 30%. Perhaps Mike C regards Scotland as 'foreign'. Incidentally MTR is headed up by Jeremy Long who ran Anglia in the good old GB Railways days.

2015-16 Estimates of station usage published

Rather worrying are numbers at Wick 19,766 and Thurso 38,426, both having dropped in recent years. Compare with, at the ends of a long Welsh branch, Pwllheli 77,890 and Aberystwyth 321,758. Similar-ish for England, Skegness 354,070. The cost of running the Far North line must be desperate.

Farnborough North. 1,647 in 2005-6, 344,042 in 2007-8, now 646,536 in 2015-6. Why such growth?

    First class obsolete?

We can debate how much space should be devoted to each class and what the price differential should be, but it's hard to see why passengers should not be given a choice of comfort/space levels with prices to suit. Would anyone suggest there should be only one type of car, one level of air...
