Others will know much more than me but procuring the transformers to the relevant spec might not be straightforward and I am also wondering if current EMC standards would apply, there is a lot of history of new types causing/revealing immunity problems with signalling. The 458s seem to have been...
Yes, wikipedia has this to say: "The trailer car was provided with a pantograph well and space for an alternating-current transformer, enabling conversion to 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead-line operation if required at a later date."
So in theory with the pan and xformer/rectifier fitted the traction...
Place is usually milling with ppl who are trapped in this doom loop. The whole concept of trying to prevent pax from entering by what is clearly the front of the building is quite absurd, given how many occasional travellers and tourists there will be who are not familiar with the place.
IIRC there were several posts on here about drivers/station staff at Norwich leaving trains unlocked for long periods of time, with various unfortunate consequences.
But conversely the drivers will leave a bus already full of passengers unattended while they go in search of their relief, or...
Seems endemic where there are two different operators.
E.g. Bus 164 from Salcombe to Totnes is run by Tally Ho!. 93S is run by Stagecoach to a modified timetable from Torcross to Kingsbridge and often delayed by the culvert works in the centre of Kingsbridge (they can't organise a S/bound exit...
This seems to be an area where the railways could learn from other industries. I can think of no other sector where such a wide variety of practice would be tolerated in a safety-critical process. Even acknowledging the history (including DOO and much else) it seems a recipe for disaster for the...
Well the GWR driver quoted in post #7,364 upthread says they won't then keep to the t/table. And my limited amount of experience of PAD - TOT is a lot of lost time in good weather for no very obvious cause, dry track and TSRs on the Berks and Hants section can't be the only reason.
IMO the spec...
ETA bit of an overlap with @Railperf's post.
I think not, this article says there are 8 x 290kW traction motors on the 810, under cars 2 and 4.
So there must be inter-car connectors for the engines in cars 1 and 5, I would expect it to be a bus capable of handling any combination of power...
Sounds like in practice the 736kW @40C in the spec sheet isn't achievable in a hot summer then.
I note this wikipedia article repeats a Modern Railways comment that they are prone to overheat. And it also says the GWR units (which have a slightly different 700kW version) have reverted to their...
Thanks. So does the engine mapping in the ECU give a minimum of 735 kW even at high ambient temps or is it the case that this figure applies only in more temperate (shoulder season) conditions and is derated ATM?
You would expect the power rating to be a function of ambient temperature (as with many mechanical and electrical items) so some de-rating in the current heatwave would seem to be very sensible, whether contractually imposed or not.
+1 to that.
It's my least favourite place to drive, what with the hilly terrain, restricted parking and a maze-like one-way system that even satnav finds hard to cope with.
Went on a site visit to Plessey/STC as I think it then was by train decades ago, the HST failed on the return and I...
Yes, almost certainly pure greenwash. For reliable year round off-grid operation you need a really big battery. If grid is available that is usually the most economic choice by far.
For another instance see this thread.
This has been much discussed in heat pump circles bc lower HW temperatures increase the theoretical risk. Consensus is that it is unlikely to be a problem in domestic hw tanks with high turnover (for ppl with unimpaired immune systems anyway). This article is an oft-quoted source. Institutional...
Very dependent on where you are in the British Isles.
Non-mains water supplies in moorland areas are so aggressive that you need DZR (dezincification-resistant) brass or gunmetal fittings.
Cambridge water from boreholes in chalk is so alkaline it is quite safe in lead pipes, nevertheless they...
Well they can't both have priority, one has to go first. Clearly without a dynamic loop any overtaking manouevre is going to delay the Thameslink further, this occurs by the least amount if you recess it just before the Fen Line catches it up. It seems to me there are conceptual possibilities to...
Details, details... That's small beer compared with other suggestions on this thread e.g. (re)instating the originally planned 3rd and 4th platforms at Letchworth or new through roads at Finsbury Park. Would it help in principal?
Another thought, the flyover route at Hitchin runs alongside the...
Yes but if the piston kits are like hen's teeth worldwide they cannot produce them by magic. Probably outsourced by Cummins like many engineering components so subject to the vagaries of their supplier(s). If there are limited supplies it's a difficult decision how to allocate between new...
