In my experience, I have found an EMT advance with a railcard is cheaper than a Megatrain ticket for the same train. Buy from the East Midlands Trains website and you can get an extra £1 off advances (I think that might be before the railcard discount). In terms of more flexible tickets...

The only reason I can see of booking ahead is that you may be more likely to get a seat reservation for longer journeys on busier trains. Also, for some people wanting reservations, having an extra trip to the ticket office earlier in the day or the day before may be difficult. I suppose you...

I took the OP to mean that he wanted to mainly do ECML and avoid the WCML, not necessarily that he wanted to do all of the ECML.

If I understand it correctly: Kilmarnock to London can use map AS, so via Glasgow, Newton, EDB and down the ECML. Paisley to London can use GN+HX+ER, so for example, via Glasgow, Carlisle and Newcastle.
