The Dawlish sea wall situation will get worse. There is absolutely no doubt about this and planning for an alternative should start now. Sea level is rising and will continue to rise.
Good to see that a late train leaving Edinburgh at 23:54/55 is proposed on Fridays & Saturdays. There is a major problem in England with last trains leaving major centres - eg Manchester & Leeds - far too early.
This 2hr gap exists in both directions and is quite sensible in my opinion. Demand is lower in the evenings than during the day and rather than stop at 19:29 it makes sense to spread the last 2 services in this way so that potential passengers are not stranded.
There is very little similarity between Manchester and Bradford. For example, there are plenty of activities available in Manchester in the evenings for people to engage in. Bradford is dead.
This difference is relevant to the rail discussion. Few people travel into Bradford centre by choice...
A route through Bradford would have considerable benefits, enabling journeys such as Shipley-Halifax which is not practical by rail at present. I would suggest:
1) Extend the Skipton-Bradford service to Leeds via Pudsey
2) Extend the Ilkley-Bradford service to Halifax and possibly Huddersfield...
Precisely. It is only a matter of time before this stretch of line ends up in the sea.
Sea level is rising due to a combination of thermal expansion and glacier melt. Not only is it rising but the rise is accelerating.
Planning the route of a rail bypass needs to start now.
The inland route will become essential not optional. There is no comparison between any infrequent and temporary problems an inland electrified route might have with wind and snow when compared with flooding of the coastal route - which will only get worse [see my previous post].
I haven't ventured SW of Bristol since 1987, so I am not a local just wanting the best for my local area. I do not agree with those that say there is no money for a Dawlish avoiding line. Money can be made available for anything given the necessary political will.
Personally I think a new...
That is not how I see this subject. Low Moor was proposed for reopening years ago and further delay is unacceptable. For anyone that doesn't have a car, some degree of social exclusion is likely if there is no railway station within easy reach. In West Yorkshire it is essential to be able to...
I consider this to be a ridiculous question but I will give an answer anyway by giving 2 examples: (a) In recent years I have used Wakefield Kirkgate on several occasions. This speaks for itself. (b) Another station I use frequently in West Yorkshire has recently been made unsafe by the...
It's a bad thing for reasons already mentioned in this thread. It forces people to either make journeys by less safe transport or prevents them making journeys which are too slow to be practical without the station. Delay to the station has a negative impact on quality of life for people living...
Why have new safety requirements been introduced?
During daytime 2tph would be the sensible number of trains to stop at Low Moor, not 3tph which would slow the third one for no good reason.
I think Colne-Skipton has a strong case, although I don't expect it be reopened anytime soon. The main benefits are to join up the populations on each side of the gap, not to improve transport within the gap. Blackburn/Burnley/Nelson/Colne needs to be joined up with Skipton/Keighley/Bingley/Shipley.
I agree. 'The business case does not give the required benefits' is code for the fact that the County Council would prefer any available money to be wasted on road schemes.
Most of this stretch is slow, but can hardly be classified as boring. Facing forwards when travelling westbound the view of Pendle Hill is quite special.
