They did an awful job aesthetically with the ticket hall and subway to the street and mainline station. It's got to be the gloomiest station on the network.
I'll take a look. Something in my memory says the 92s were orriginally named after famous Europeans rather quickly and without ceremony which might account for the decision to opt for "stickers". But again my memory could be playing tricks.
I vaguely remember reading there was a reason why the polo mints couldn't be removed but I can't remember what. Certainly the theories put forward here sound valid.
Did proper nameplates first appear a few years after the 92 introduction? If so perhaps it was a warranty issue.
In one of...
It doesn't surprise me. Southeastern can't even look after their own stock let alone those on dual-TOC operated services. And unfortunately for FCC I'm sure most passengers associate the 319s with them rather than Southeastern who operate the Kent-bound services. Perhaps it's time for the DfT to...
Interesting to see Electra is on the list. So much material prior to the launch of the class 91 used this name including a model carrying the Electra branding but when the real thing rolled off the production line it carried the IC swallow instead.
Also interesting to see such names as Capital...
From an outsider's point of view American trains don't seem to look any different than they did a few decades ago. There's this flat-fronted type and the type with the recessed gangway and chain across the door. I'm sure the mechanics have been upgraded but they seem to favour the industrial...
Was it mentioned under the live service info? If so it might be a 465 with one carriage locked out of use which happens fairly frequently or a 378 with two carriages out of use which, rarer, occurred recently.
My local Southeastern station's dot matrix displays tend to scroll the information on weekdays (but not at weekends) after the calling points of the service. Unfortunately if the countdown minute changes the scrolling text reverts to the first calling point and you have to wait for all of them...
In the Great Anglia thread there's been mention of how pay and conditions between the three former franchises (WAGN, Anglia, Great Eastern) differ and are unlikely to be resolved. It got me thinking. Did this come about through privatisation or were there differences back in the BR days? Did BR...
Thanks all for the info. Interesting stuff.
Picking up on the last point of SWT not moving to DOO, I thought the SWT current franchise requirement insists on guards. During its early years SWT learnt the hard way after losing too many drivers and fighting a spate of industrial action. I got the...
I've just realised that in all my years of interest in the railways I've never once thought about corridor connections between diesels let alone seen a picture. I don't know what I thought the doors were for! Great thread.
Regarding c2c I think you've got to remember just how poor the LTS "misery line" reputation was at that point. Old rolling stock, delays etc and the post-privatisation green stripe over the NSE red did little to promote a forward-looking company. You've also got to put it in perspective of the...
The book is called Do Not Pass Go by Tim Moore. It's a thoroughly enjoyable read. The author visits the present day (early 2000s) sites, relays their history and describes what they were like when Victor Watson and his secretary Marjorie Phillips visited London and why they chose them. You are...
The fact First has had so many corporate identities suggests they've never really got it right. I still remember the reports of standard class passengers getting confused by the flying F and the word First when they took over Great Western. Personally I've never been a fan of purple and pink on...
I hope the LM twitter feed retains its personality. With both theirs and GoVia 's Southern you feel like there's a human at the end of the feed. Compare that to Southeastern's Twitter feed which only offers updates and refuses to acknowledge or reply to questions.
True, compare Southern's Twitter service which responds to passenger questions with that of sister company Southeastern which merely tweets service updates if (and it's a big if) you're lucky. Little wonder there are so many disgruntled Southeastern passenger sites on Twitter. Anyway back to...
