    Scottish Electrification updates & discussion

As an aside I remember Terence Cuneo describing how he did the sketches for that painting actually sitting in situ on the upper structure of the bridge and how he was affected by the wind and by vertigo. He liked to work from life and had a train positioned on the bridge to pose for him. None of...

They have also use Series 1 on the Whifflet - Rutherglen line on at least one of the bridges; I suppose for the same reason. I must say it's all getting very confusing: you knew where you stood when it was all MK IIIa (the king of catenaries).

Airdrie - Bathgate - Edinburgh? Probably the last MK III project in the UK.

Thanks Mr Phlopp. Has it reached the drawing board yet? Could you not throw a little smidgin of MK III for handsomeness' sake? Seriously though, and without wishing to pry into matters as yet too commercially sensitive for man or beast, in what ways will it differ from Series 1 (cheaper...

My humble opinion, for what it's worth, is that both Series 1 and Series 2 systems are horrendously ugly and that the pinnacle of OLE design - aesthetically at least - was MK IIIa. The new systems are heavier and more visually intrusive than even Mk I; like vast metal military structures left...

Thanks for that answer P.P. Interesting to note that the Glasgow..Gourock line was the only place in Britain with the non-standard Mk II ole and now it seems to be (just about) the only place in Britain with the non-standard SM1 ole. Scotrail can now boast a very impressive catalogue of...

Obviously the new electrification schemes are using Series 1 (GWML) or Series 2 (EGIP, etc). These new equipments are said to be quite expensive up front - much more so than MkIIIb which was cheaper to install but more expensive to maintain. In view of what's been happening elsewhere maybe...
