What is the closest you've come to meeting your maker?

I remember your flight over the grounds but not the evasion move. In my case, I was riding my bicycle out of my drive and waved to my next door neighbour but she grimaced. Next thing a van had come round the corner too fast and only just missing me!

    Reform UK discussion

That is how the Lord's Prayer will go in Kent CC meetings: Our Farage, who ain't in Clacton, hollowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; we will be done; on earth as it is in Clacton. Give us this day our daily lie. And forget us our travails, as we forget those who travail against us. And lead us...

Southern English attitude to air con - curious to me

Back in September 2023 I stayed in the Village hotel in Dudley for 3 nights and only some of the rooms had air con (the newer ones) and I was very lucky to get one of those as the weather was very hot at the time!

Apartment overlooking railway. Where would you choose

Do you remember the estate agent blurb for a flat overlooking the tracks out of Waterloo with the description "perfect for a deaf trainspotter" way back in the 1980s?

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

They are both said differently, "teer up" - to cry; "tair up" - to wreck.

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

I went to a convention in a rugby stadium a few years ago, there were miles and miles of steel trough urinals but only 6 handwashing sinks and 3 hot air hand dryers in the gents!

The extortionate prices of postage stamps these days.

And it was possible to post a letter from the UK to other EU member states by using just one 1st class stamp then! Pity that facility was abolished around 2000.

    Best rolling stock toilets

Never had the courage to use those ever! I confess that I have seen so many disgusting train bogs in my lifetime that I always skip the train bog section of every train review video by the likes of InterCity Simon, SuperAlbs etc.

    Your favourite stretches of road

Heading south to my hated boarding school at the start of term back in the 1980s, that stretch always made me feel like I was leaving civilization behind!

The Lincoln town centre freight issue

:D Daftest crayon I have seen! There was a proposal to build a railway tunnel under Lincoln by the Lancaster Derbyshire and East Coast Railway for a new coal flow line to a proposed coal export dock at Sutton on Sea. Great Central railway put paid to this idea by building Immingham docks.

    Do you have any phobias?

Siderodromophobia is not one that afflict any rail enthusiast either ;)

Why did Lincoln St Marks close and not Central?

Lincoln Central is far better located than St Marks was. It was a simple matter of reinstating the curve from Boultham Junction to West Holmes Junction to connect the Newark line to Lincoln Central. It really made sense to consolidate passengers services into one station in the same town.
