We all love to reminisce but my view is that this is overklill on a grand scale. A route exists between Bath & Bournemouth which is about 17 miles longer than the S&D main trunk was which was 72 miles. So rebuild 72 miles of railway with many breaks in the original route to save 17 miles ...

I've never done that trip , anyone who has put their hand up. I've done Taunton-Birmninghamn and Bristol-Manchester a few times and found the trains to be comfortable quick and reasonably priced. Toilet smells still get my oversensitive nose from time to time but it's not a massive distraction...
