What could/should Merseyrail have ordered instead of Class 777s?

Merseyrail and the Tyne and Wear Metro have far more overlaps in terms of how they were modernised/converted in the 1970s into what they are today. BR's own proposal for the Metro was to have extensive 4 aspect signalling, and I imagine a "BR Tyne and Wear Metro" would have received PEP stock...

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

The 555 seem to be reaching Lemon territory. It is fortunate Stadler are responsible for the maintenance of these sheds.

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

I've just been on 555021 and the floor at each door vestibule has been covered with textured sheet metal that gas been scrqed into the floor and metal door plinth in a rather ad-hoc manor. Is this a temp fix for something, or permanent?

    Russia invades Ukraine

Plus depending on the wind patterns, it is likely any possible fallout could land in Russia’s puppet regime in Belarus and/or Russia itself. The same would apply to nuclear strikers deeper into Europe. Would Putin care?

    C2C upcoming nationalisation.

I don't remember a Knight or the equally iconic (IMHO) Martin Lambie-Nairn designed flag ident. AFIK The Anglia TOC logo was IIRC a BR shadow franchise creation that was carried forward.

Train drivers will finally have access to toilets

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but the likes of the Class 82 had chemical toilets fitted (and so do other locs in other countries) - is that not common practice in modern locomotives (I realise it is a different story for multiple unit stock!).

    Why 1973 Stock first?

Would the 2024 Bakerloo stock need the floating coach design that is being used on the Picadilly? The 2024 Stock is based on the Siemens Inspiro platform, so will hopefully incorporate as may of the tired ant tested components and build practices as possible.

Might the Whitehaven tunnel issues result in closure? Could Whitehaven be brought back into use? And other speculation on this issue...

THORP should never have been built. The market for reprocessed uranium evaporated before construction started. IMHO The other two reprocessing plants B204 and B205 were necessary – even without their military role. I doubt a burner reactor will ever be built (but I think it should to reduce the...

Porterbrook Class 150 gifted to Mid Hants Railway.

I'm glad to see a Class 150 has been preserved and hopefully a few more will be in due course. I can appreciate people's frustration over the condition and availability of the rest of the fleet, but these trains are well past their intended life span when built, and after what has happened in...

Might the Whitehaven tunnel issues result in closure? Could Whitehaven be brought back into use? And other speculation on this issue...

There has been rumblings over the years of building a "burner" Fast Neutron Nuclear Reactor in or near Sellafield. While unlikely, if such a plant was ever built, such a plant may spark an increase in flask traffic, especially from the proposed Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (I have my...

Might the Whitehaven tunnel issues result in closure? Could Whitehaven be brought back into use? And other speculation on this issue...

No, like Sizewell B they will store their spent fuel on site. Sellafield’s role these days (other than decommissioning) is the long term storage of spent AGR fuel, as the fuel ponds at the AGR sites are small (as it was always intended to send their spent fuel to Sellafield).

Might the Whitehaven tunnel issues result in closure? Could Whitehaven be brought back into use? And other speculation on this issue...

It is quite disturbing hearing suggestions for the tunnel to be perinatally closed, but it does seem at times that some posters have an odd fatalistic vision for our railways, like culling XC services north of York. I know electrification of the route is not high on anyone’s agenda, but I was...

    Freedom pass - ptsd

My gut feeling was that the claimed PTSD and Mental heath issues would probably not convince TfL to issue a final warning unless legal representation was obtained (and doing that is not guaranteed to keep it out of court either). The OP has not been on since 17th July, so perhaps it is best that...

What could/should Merseyrail have ordered instead of Class 777s?

If the problems continue with the 777s and the 555s perhaps Mersytravel and Nexus could start legal action. From what I've heard from inside Nexus, the 555s fall under the "Cheap but not cheerful" category Maybe then both systems can get something better! 1754084615 Absolutely. The Bombardier...

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

Plus if the base paintwork is two pack it is quite a chore to remove due to it's toxicity, which is one of the reasons why vinyls are used for "repaints". I imagine most of the Networkers and Class 323s still carry their original liveries underneath to this day.

Why are Class 700s considered unpopular?

From my perspective the initial negativity of the 700s was the political factor that the order did not go to Bombardier. For me personally, the interior is very bleak, even by Desiro standards.
