It has to be said that Crewe is an ideal location for a rail hub for HS2 because of it being a great interchange junction and loads of railway land all around it.
Therefore hardly surprising that no decision on a refrub will be made until HS2 plans are finalised!
Makes perfect sense to me...
"just seems nuts to me that there of dozens of serviceable locos that could go through the Super 60 refurb that will fix all of the electronics issues you mention."
Isn't that the issue though - that the locos are not serviceable hence the costly super 60 programme?
I'd love to see more back...
Despite what some have suggested on here there clearly is some realistic scope for HST usage in the medium term.
Personally I'd like to see more sets on cross country routes as they're always over crowded and, as HSTs already use that route we know (as opposed to many people wildly...
From my experience virtually all virgin trains are seriously overcrowded as are the london midland trains. In fact it's the fact that the trains on the wcml are so busy is a huge incentive for HS2 purely on capacity issues.
But what makes it bizarre is that they now have 56 sets rather than the original 53. Bizarre in as much that they went for more sets at the same time as increasing some of the sets to 11cars. Why not focus on extending all sets?
Greenback, you seem rather damning of any positive posts on this. I don't think anyone is under any illusions that this proposal is both very costly and unlikely to actually occur. However surely the point of a forum such as this is to allow people to explore wold dream possibilities and think...
Yes, of course the A55 improvement have contributed to this. In exactly the same way a new railway will attract new usage. Rail useage is growing hand over fist at present and now is the time to capitalise on that. It will also offer an alternative route to mid wales (albeit a long way round)...
In the 80s I took a picture of a Laira based 08 in Penzance station. Definitely wasn't the Long Rock one. I've always wondered how long it must have taken to get there and when?
Sounds like the poor bloke should change jobs to do something about it and/or join campaign for better transport aa he's clearly passionate about.
I was at Plymouth in August and have to partially agree with him. The station is a mere shadow of what it once was and needs less than half the...
Bigdelboy that sounds a fair and reasonable assessment.
As for the class 58s I understand that there are only 2 stored outside at Toton both clearly visible at the south end of the depot from the bridal path just off banks road.
Excuse me for being really thick but what exactly is a conrod through the side?
But also if their engine hours are high and/or have serious engine problems then why haven't they been scrapped years ago?
Pretty much my thinking too. Especially given that most of them haven't seen regular action for about 10 years! Their engine hours must be well under the planned/designed usage.
I can't imagine the 150s ever needing 1st class - and all also even to bother with a parcels section.
I would have suggested that a smoking/non-smoking section would have been the most likely scenario.
I've been curious about this for a while now and having recently popped over to Toton on Sunday afternoon it raised my curiosity further.
I'm sure most will know that there is a line of 24 stored 60s at the north east of Toton across the mainline tracks away from the depot. But there are also...
Exactly what i was wondering.
If Tesco can run containers to remote Scotland surely Morrisons can run them to Aber. When i last went to Aber i noted that morrisons was built on the flood plain of the river Rheidol with some room for a container distribution depot. Not sure who owns the land...
Iirc it was the 16:11 from Coventry southbound on Saturday and Tuesday morning the 08.51 from Rugby northbound. Fairly sure that's right with 221107 on the Saturday shift. Can't recall about the Tuesday one though.
