Have to disagree about this being anachronistic, it's just a divergence of tastes. I only buy instant and it's all I need for a caffeine kick first thing, after that it's tea for the rest of the day.
Very true. When I was a conductor the few times I dealt with £50 notes were always when working trains from Manchester Airport and selling tickets to newly arrived visitors from overseas, mostly Chinese.
Working in retail now I see £50 notes often enough that I no longer consider them unusual...
I have followed baseball for nearly 30 years and have been aware of many US-based discussions about the relative popularity of the different team sports. You may be surprised by the generally accepted rankings: NFL is easily the most popular followed by NBA. MLB is third but in a gradual...
Back in the day most Hastings services, whether from Charing Cross or Cannon Street, didn't stop at London Bridge with next stop typically being Orpington or even Sevenoaks.
I would suggest that the amount of football on tv is a huge factor here. Back in the '70s the only live football on tv was the Cup Final and (some of) the Home Internationals, with UEFA club finals sometimes appearing if an English team was involved. So World Cups did seem like genuine festivals...
To avoid going too far OT I will simply point out that this statement is factually incorrect. Those who are interested will be able to do their own rersearch.
Simplon summit is 705m. Highest summit on GB network is Druimuachdar (Highland Mainline) at a mere 452m, not much of a comparison. While @HSTEd is correct to say that these days the cost of a tunnelled route is not significantly more than one on the surface (though stations are another matter!)...
This doesn't make much sense: have you seen the horseshoe curves and even spirals on routes like the Gotthard or Semmering? Tunnels were only used when there was really no alternative. The long base tunnels of today are a much more recent development post-dating the Channel Tunnel.
When I did it many years ago it ran York-Harrogate-Leeds-York-Scarborough & return. Black 5s dominated (5305 for me) and it ran M-F during the school summer holidays with a "trial" run on Spring BH Monday. That's probably as good as it will ever get for railways and tourism on the Yorkshire coast.
I don't remember the precise details now but at one point (Sectorisation era?) there was just such a working, more or less overnight, between Doncaster and Newcastle (I think) which was used as a way of moving 153s between their then maintenance base of Heaton and their usual Lincolnshire...
As a fan since the heady days of the 69-70 season I have to agree. If BlueCo get the next appointment wrong we'll be following the Spuds into the Championship.
This is a gross exageration. In many north-eastern states (including both New York and Massachusetts) less than 25% of households own a gun and in both Illinois and California that rate is below 30%.
My guess is that someone in the DfT or LNER has expressed an opinion that revenue maximisation on LNER would be aided by ending the acceptance of regional rovers on LNER services. And by a process of Chinese whispers we get the story told by the OP. Given that we are currently in a period of...
TBH my money was (figuratively) on Env400EV demonstrator AD24ZEB being the next such vehicle to join the fleet permanently (with Harrogate since last summer) but it hasn't tracked since apparently breaking down in Leeds on 1st April...
Good grief, not again. "Sandgrounders" are largely irrelevant to this argument. Usage of the the "Southport" line tails off dramatically west of Burscough Bridge. And demand for a direct service to Oxford Road is both real and justified. Employment opportunities in the wider Wigan area are such...
But equally a signaller operating Absolute Block Signalling can do so without any such maps. Perhaps you should do some research on ABS, then you may understand how it is a safe system whose main disadvantage is the relatively high staffing cost due to the method of work not being suitable for...
Of course it's adequate. The purpose of signalling, by whatever means, is to ensure the safe operation of trains. Resignalling is an expensive business and such expenditure needs to be justified. That will normally be due to extensive changes being made to the track layouts, electrification or...
It may well be in decline but judging from what I see in my local supermarket it is far from dead. Bake Off Britain is surely inspiring a lot of younger people to have a go.
