    Bucharest-Sofia Tickets

I'd say it is easier (and cheap too) to buy tickets on the day, re-booking at Ruse (there is plenty of time there to do this). Even when it is a through train, extra coaches are attached at Ruse and it is worth checking out these alternative seating options, such as compartment/open stock.

    Eurostar+DB ticket

I travelled last Easter and tweeted Eurostar as to this ticket's validity on other services between Brussels and Aachen. Their reply indicated it was valid on Belgian domestic trains, so I used the IC Brussels - Verviers and the local train to Aachen (and the RE onwards to Cologne) without any...

    SWT Additional Christmas services

I wondered that too, but I imagine the idea was to attract day trip passengers from Weymouth, Dorchester, and Poole, with Bournemouth (reached much more quickly by bus) simply being a convenient terminus/origin.

    SWT Additional Christmas services

I was indeed in the front carriage - and the heating worked there!

    SWT Additional Christmas services

I travelled on one of these services last Sunday (27th November). I was on my way from London to Dorchester and a route via Salisbury mysteriously appeared on the journey planner. I wondered if it was a computer glitch, but since the train ran at a convenient time, I decided to give it a go...

Airlines bringing in Child Free Zones - should train companies do the same?

When I say it seems wrong, I don't mean it is objectively wrong, it just sits uncomfortably with me. I'd rather a clearly labelled quiet zone, as that achieves the same aim - and probably more effectively. I especially like the quiet zones on some trains in the Netherlands, as the window label...

Airlines bringing in Child Free Zones - should train companies do the same?

I hope we never have 'child free zones' on trains - it just seems wrong to me. However, quiet areas are great. The quiet zones in South West Trains class 450 are a source of frustration, however. If I travel with children, I'll try to avoid the quiet coach (and also the adjacent coach which is...

Baby change facilities in male ralway station toilets

I think the unisex option to toilet provision is most definitely the way forward. In my organisation we are seriously planning to replace our traditional male/female toilets with a series of fully enclosed rooms containing both toilet and sink, opening into an ordinary corridor. The advantage of...

    Paris - Moscow

There's a Polish PKP Intercity restaurant car between Paris and Warsaw. It is not cheap, but it's not outrageous either. Food and service is good and it makes a special treat watching the evening sunset as the train speeds through the Champagne country east of Paris. After the 'fun and games' of...

    Paris - Moscow

I did the trip last year. The train arrives into Brest on the 'Warsaw side' standard gauge platforms, where border formalities take place. Once this is done, the train is shunted into a large shed, broken up, and the carriages are lifted for the bogie change. Certainly when I was there we were...

    #334 Skopje - Belgrade & #414 Belgrade - (Zagreb) - Ljubljana

I travelled on that train between Belgrade and Zagreb last August. Stock was indeed the Serbian equivalent of Mark 3s from Belgrade to the Border, with croatian coaches (with toilet paper!) added at the border. There was also a Serbian restaurant car with schnitzel and chips. I think this just...

When does 'TFL' element of Day Travelcard expire?

Lovely helpful staff again (and as always) at my local station. I showed my Travelcard to the member of staff (thought it best not to try the barrier) and was fully prepared to plead my case - but I was let through with a friendly 'that's fine'. I must admit that I'd be rather upset if I came...

When does 'TFL' element of Day Travelcard expire?

I'm following this thread with interest, as after a period during which the ticket barriers at my local station gave me back my outboundary travelcard, the other week it was retained. Initially I was told I could not have it back, but the member of staff allowed me to fish it out after I...

When does 'TFL' element of Day Travelcard expire?

The idea of a travelcard becoming 'void' when the 'outboundary' return is used sounds odd. For example, if I travel to London on a out-boundary travelcard from my local station of Staines and return around 3 pm, I still use my travelcard on the TFL bus routes that serve Staines. If I then want...

    Night Riviera 14/02/16

I travelled on Sunday night on the Night Riviera to Penzance. We left Paddingon on time at 23.50 but came to a stand in the vicinity of Royal Oak until around 1.30 am. Arrival in Penzance was dead on time, but those joining at Reading must have had a rather long (and cold) wait. This isn't a...

New pod-style couchette design previewed in Austria

I think this is fantastic, and ideal for single travellers. I'd echo the comments on the linked site about luggage space - there doesn't seem to be very much of it. However, overall I like the concept very much.

Reading to Waterloo Line stopping pattern

Living in Staines, it's noticeable how busy the trains are in the 'opposite' direction to the peak flow to/from London. There can be as many people getting on trains to London on the evening peak as there are arriving passengers, and similar in the morning. In fact I have never travelled on a...

gold card discount on oyster card

I got my (Ryde) Gold Card discount added no problem at all by a member of staff at the Underground 'ticket hall' at Waterloo yesterday. He logged into a special function on the self-serve ticket machine and it was all over in seconds!
