The size of the suburban network must have given it a critical mass that must have seemed obvious at the time. Also I'd have thought having tunnelled sections would be part of it, electric being preferable to steam. (a similar case for Mersey rail in a tunnel between Liverpool and Birkenhead/the...
i have sometimes wondered if there is any circumstance in which a Glasgow to Leeds via Settle would be competitive timewise versus going via Edinburgh. I mean if timed to fit gaps in east cost services. Or even Glasgow to Bradford. Just as a thought experiment.
I suppose it depends on which route to Haverhill. If it's Haverhill via SW then of course it's included. If there is no case to go all the way to Haverhill, then what about a stub to SW?
Of course I have not thought it through. But. What about a shuttle to Stansted Airport being part of the...
Not surprisingly I'd like to see some faster trains London-Glasgow stopping at fewer stops. A return to the Euston-Preston-Carlisle-Motherwell-Glasgow would do nicely. At least some faster / 'express' services please, even if not every hourly service.
Continuing the theme of stubs or spurs
Ashington, Blyth, Washington?
Southwell, spur into Nottingham?
Saffron Walden? (15k+)
Canvey Island? (38k+) (I see there is an old thread on this, https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/railways-in-canvey-island.65050/)
I am just suddenly wondering if there has ever been a case made for Bo'ness?
It's a short stub, the population is 14000+, it is close to major populations centres....
...or is the presence of a heritage railway a barrier?
And... what would be the junction arrangements? Yet another stop on...
I did wonder about a boat (but that wasn't the question!). I see there have been proposals in the past for a water service to Glasgow Airport.
Clearances I don't know, it would depend on the route of course. But for starters, a route from either the Riverside Museum or Science Museum to the...
OK, I get that, but why have highly paid brand managers and graphic designers, if the passengers don't care about the colour on the front of the train?
I'd have a thought Glasgow waterfront could be worth a look (again)? It seems a place of still unfulfilled potential, with parts of both north and south banks still relatively remote from public transport.
Interesting to see how trams could benefit a place that never had them, was never designed for then, could be a model for elsewhere. and/or, is there already a model from elsewhere?
Good answers, points taken and understood, thanks.
Nevertheless as a passenger I look forward to the day an enterprising competitor offers a non stop Edinburgh to Glasgow option (maybe onward to Newcastle etc), and London-Preston-Carlisle-Glasgow (even just one a day, is it too much to ask?).
OK I agree the label Express seems to be so inconsistently used it may be meaningless. But if we temporarily forget the word Express (and the forelock-tugging signalmen)...
I think its debatable that the modern railway provides a sufficient mix of slower and faster services on some of the...
Personally I don't see the thread as getting 'hung up' about names; I see that as part of the debate. Sure, Express could be just a marketing name with no meaning; and/or that we don't need old-style express trains because of acceleration and passenger loading. i welcome hearing such views; but...
For what it's worth, I was surprised at the removal of what had been a long established safety feature. I then assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the matter had been tested, debated, accepted and settled. In that context, assuming the safety issue was accepted, then it seems reasonable to raise...
Thanks, yes that has some useful background information from back around that time but I am wondering how people think it is actually panning out, now.
For example there was a post somewhere, I think recently, about safety in slow speed/depot conditions, but I think it was not part of a wider...
Yes I take your point, it needs to be part of a bigger venture, though I'd be thinking (speculating) here of the international railfreight infrastructure - linking Ireland/UK/EU.
