    Japanese knotweed

I have it in my garden. Landlord takes almost no responsibility, much to the consternation of the home owning neighbour... I don't mind too much though for the dogs' sake.. Since being treated either side however i have found it is much reduced in our garden. What i also read, before it was...

Running bus and coach services on Christmas day - is it greed?

Remembering when Courage brewery, when it was in Reading, funded free local bus services on NYE night, atleast part of the thinking being there will be lots of intoxicated people and it would be good to help make sure they don't try driving...

Running bus and coach services on Christmas day - is it greed?

All good as long as it remains totally voluntary for all staff. Also, with no trains running there is clearly going to be demand for a few bus and coach services. And if domestic flights are operating and we're serious about the ecological crisis...

Could Cross Country services call additionally at Brockenhurst, New Milton and Christchurch?

No Winchester?? Wow.. Good point though, and that low capacity is exacerbated by running less services. Still lazy though - with a bit of effort the connections could be kept, perhaps by making stops south of Reading p.u./s.d. only?

Could Cross Country services call additionally at Brockenhurst, New Milton and Christchurch?

I wondered why they therefore can't be re-extended to Poole, until:

Could Cross Country services call additionally at Brockenhurst, New Milton and Christchurch?

If memory serves correctly, atleast one service in the evenings way back in '92 called there - heard it announced at Reading every day. BR days, and may have been the only one..

Do HSTs still run at 125mph?

Yeah i guess the Somerset Levels play a part.. But regards those other issues, how would it be any different to the clearing of other routes for higher speeds? Just the factor it is more out of the way geographically (linking less large population centres etc), so considered not as worth it...

Do HSTs still run at 125mph?

What is there to stop Bristol-Cogload being 125? Looks as well laid out as Padd-Didcot.

    1963 Southampton to Wembley

Thank YOU for wanting to make it factually correct. Many of us cringe (some more than others) at inaccuracies in works of fiction... Me - I used to more than I do now.. And thanks for starting this thread - t'is very interesting. And for not wanting to plug your other book.. :-)

The Green belt and the Underground

Agreed totally (though both would be good), the latter would be excellent as a Northern line branch (and extend to the ECML station for interchange perhaps..). However, doesn't the tube surface north of the Ally Pally junction, thus meaning a new underground junction and tunnel or two would be...

The Green belt and the Underground

Or if it (the whole line) hadn't been closed for electrification work... (Would likely still have closed sometime - stayed open for freight into the sixties then that was it.)

The Green belt and the Underground

Thanks, didn't know that bit of the history. Presumably the Mill Hill East branch therefore would not exist now had it not been for the barracks.

    Plane fares

Cheers Bletchleyite and Bald Rick :-) Re my comment on per mile pricing - read that old thread Yorkie linked to; interesting points. I'm not into it as rigidly (and ridiculously) as some were on there, more as a basic principle to start with and tweak where appropriate. Never flown, so quite...

    Plane fares

Really good question Yorkie, thanks. I'm generally into (as) simple (as is reasonable*) per mile pricing for all modes, but particularly rail and bus, partly to give a semblance of equality with car travel. (*An exception would be where a ticket is valid via different routes.) Not quite what...
