That's part of what I meant by "Americanisation". "Conductor" is what Americans have always called what we are meant to call "guards". "Conductor", to me, meant a fellow who checked fares on a bus.
I'm not a xenophobe by nature, but I find the creeping Americanism of British terminology to be very vexing. I'm sure that this is just another example, much as "truck" is displacing "lorry". "Train manager" is plain ugly.
