My suggestion for distance based pricing

Moderator note: split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/ticket-prices-cost-per-mile-north-vs-south.176213/ A complete overhaul by the ORR & with each TOC around fares would seem a much fairer system to me! I raised the topic because I've seen so many fare irregularities that it really...

Ticket Prices Cost Per Mile North vs South

There will loads of people with examples I assume but in an attempt to get some clarity on pricing I have added a comparison: South: Dover Priory to Sittingbourne £15.90 off peak rtn (roughly 32 miles apart) North: Scunthorpe to Doncaster £10.10 (Northern) £13.50 (TPE) off peak rtn (roughly 32...

SouthEastern franchise direct award through to 1 April 2020 (& franchise competition terminated)

Selfishly more 395s available during peak to form more 12 car trains should be the aim with Maidstone West to Abbey Wood and beyond be a regular service as part of a Dartford 6tph service

Why don't Diesel Trains have AdBlue?

I'd enjoy TFL charging every diesel train not meeting euro 6 standards entering the ULEZ zone in London being charged £200 per engine like lorries and coaches will be in a few months time! So thats the Virgin Voyagers 220/221s, LNER class 43s, all Chilterns fleet, GWR turbostars and remaining...

SouthEastern franchise direct award through to 1 April 2020 (& franchise competition terminated)

ABELLIO: Promises broken as per usual (new trains not delivered on schedule) a new company running more trains than its ever tried to run on any other franchise in the UK, doing so over one of the most used, oldest and most neglected railway infrastructure! Or GOVIA: Who I'd prefer didn't win...

What's the quietest possible day on the railway network?

It's dependant on what the normal service is and what the TOC is doing to stuff up the usual service, I found that SE were running 4 car trains instead of 12 car trains for a normal commuter services, they then forgot that events or sporting events were on for example in London 82,000 at...

Tale of two Northern guards dealing with fare evaders.

Am I correct in suggesting some guards are also given the power to issue penalty fares for travelling without tickets? Is it a complete ball ache to issue them to minors?

    Greater Anglia Rolling Stock Updates

Sort of Dollands Moor (where they are dragged to after exiting) is viewable from an overbridge and from the side via some woodlands next to Folkestone Rugby Club The actual tunnel portal is do-able but the walk from the nearest road or proper footpath isn't advised in anything but firm, dry...

Trivia — Stations That Have Created a New Settlement

Definitely Ebbsfleet, I can't quite remember the exact number of houses agreed to be built by the planners but it runs into the 10s of thousands

    CrossCountry lack of train crew

I would suggest that sending an extra/relief crew member (conductor/OBM) on an elongated service would be a proficient way to collect/protect revenue, imagine having to check all tickets on a double Voyager (impossible) 2 crew fantastic! But no TOCs prefer money saving than safety and money making!

SouthEastern franchise direct award through to 1 April 2020 (& franchise competition terminated)

I understand that as part of the new franchise agreement ETCS is a requirement by 2022, so new signalling and either upgraded trains or new trains to handle it

SouthEastern franchise direct award through to 1 April 2020 (& franchise competition terminated)

Omg this is becoming a joke! I've got an interview with SE (Govia) for a job that might never happen in the next 6 months now

SouthEastern franchise direct award through to 1 April 2020 (& franchise competition terminated)

It is hit and miss, I found the SE ticket barrier staff pick and choose, when it was cold a couple of days ago at Victoria the barriers were open and the poor girl was huddled up in her coat, scarf and hat in the platform cabin! I've seen people double jump through and leap the barriers, the BTP...

SouthEastern franchise direct award through to 1 April 2020 (& franchise competition terminated)

I agree, there are problem stations on some of these routes, but Shortlands for example or Beckenham Junction are very busy stations with ridership into the millions and yet there are no barriers, no visible staff beyond 7pm and huge populations who use and abuse it! The only way the revenue...
