Pacers were great between Barnsley and Meadowhall when it had jointed track, they bounced around all over the place at line speed. It's just not the same anymore!
Indeed I do believe I've seen a photo of it at St. Pancras.
My contender for never seeing a sprinter would be the line from Sheffield Victoria (as was) through to Wadsley Bridge station, which was used for football specials until the mid-90s.
I seem to recall that the Arriva Trains North 150/2s still had their original seating and layouts (with new upholstery) in the early-mid 2000s, the orange vestibules were still present. I'm guessing that would have been about 16 or so years.
Of course heritage DMUs, refurbed in the 1970s...
Cravens full stop really. I presume a lot of power/trailer combinations would struggle due to power/weight ratio, even more prevalent with heavyweights like 114s.
My biggest gripe with nationalisation is that it leaves industries/sectors in the hands of the government and governments are often: corrupt, clueless or ineffectual. Someone once said, politicians don't create wealth, they live off the hard work of others. So I figure, the less power and...
I really miss the old BR jingle before announcements, actually I miss the Phil Sayer announcements too.
Is the BR jingle still used anywhere?
York always stood out in the early 2000s, they had their own two-tone jingle, sounded like nothing else, well not the other stations I was using anyhow...
My question to this is, should referendums be legally binding therefore?
My thinking being, if referendums are only advisory, then when a government gets an answer it doesn't want, it can simply ignore the majority will. So why ask the people at all?
Regardless of the way one voted on the EU...
To be fair I was posting tongue in cheek a little, but perhaps some devolution in England and taking decisions outside of Westminster would help to level up the country for real. After all, the local Government in each region probably knows what the local regions need better than a remote power...
That's a great shot, just shows how much things have changed! I had assumed that the rail network in that area was extensive, however only seeing it like this shows how much the industry and rail network has been pruned since the mid-20th century.
I didn't mean the passing loop behind Brightside station, you are on the correct side though. Travelling from Meadowhall there's the loop line running behind the station, it rejoins and then you get the beginning of the redundant track shortly after. It runs parallel to the Down line before...
I've been wondering this for a long while.
There's a stretch of partially dismantled and overgrown track which runs along the main line, heading towards Sheffield from Meadowhall. It begins just after the old Brightside station and continues as far as the Attercliffe Road area of Sheffield...
