    Restarting HS2a

No they’re not! You yourself said the Jubilee line extension, built almost 30 years ago, was good value but this was significantly more expensive per mile than HS2 will be!

    Restarting HS2a

The costs aren’t insane. Expensive yes but fairly typical of this country. If they cancelled it because the costs were ‘insane’ why didn’t he also cancel LTC, Hinkley Point et al? Cancelling phase 2 was an entirely political decision to grab votes.

Which is identified by the ICE (in their points 1, 2 and 3) as factors why these major projects cost so much.

We are not at the design phase now and haven’t been for years.

    Restarting HS2a

Yes. It would not change the overall price significantly. It is not why HS2 (or other major infrastructure projects) is so expensive. Are you arguing that redesigning the project to incorporate slower speeds and more stations would reduce costs? Because changing the overall strategic objectives...

    Restarting HS2a

Once again, reducing the design speed (at any of stage of the project) would not address any of the fundamental issues identified by ICE. Maybe they are wrong but I believe experts using evidence and reason over internet forum members using opinion and conjecture on any day of the week.

    Restarting HS2a

The Institution of Civil Engineers identify four root causes: 1. A lack of clear strategic direction Many factors are important, but the role of government in setting clear strategic direction is “foundational”. The lack of stable policy making has been a particular problem under recent...

    Restarting HS2a

The large earthworks are explicitly there to reduce visual and acoustic impact during both the construction and operational phases of HS2. They are viewed as necessary to placate locals and hostile councils (eg Buckingham CC) who have activity tried to oppose, prevent and delay HS2 at every...

    Restarting HS2a

How many times do I have to say comparing costs to other major new build infrastructure cost in THIS country! As soon as you look abroad the context starts to get very different, very quickly.

    Restarting HS2a

I was responding to the point that HS2 was going to cost £1 billion per mile. I’m not comparing the cost of the railway to building one in France four decades ago. It’s a completely pointless comparison. I’m comparing the cost to building other major new build infrastructure in this country at...

    Restarting HS2a

£3.5 in 1999 is £8.3 in 2025 prices (ONS RPI all items) at 10.0 miles equals 830 million per mile. HS2 has some fairly big ticket items too including Euston, London tunnels, Old Oak Common, Curzon Street, the Delta Junction, crossing an AONB, etc etc. Some have suggested on here that putting the...

    Restarting HS2a

HS2 Phase 1: 22% is in tunnels (32 miles) LTC: 18% is in tunnel (2.4 miles). It is totally comparable. It is what it costs today to build major new build infrastructure projects in this country. HS2 Phase 2a is mostly on the surface which is why some claim it would be a bit cheaper...

    Restarting HS2a

It’s not costing a billion pounds a mile though is it. Even if it does cost £100 billion for HS2 phase 1 that’s £700 million per mile. To put this in context the Lower Thames Crossing is estimated to to cost £10-11 billion to build 14 miles of A-road (not even motorway grade road). Which at the...

How big a battery would a freight locomotive need to be useful on the GB network?

I don’t think that is true at all. A Mercedes EQS has a 0.118MWh battery. If they can fit that into a European sized car I don’t think it is unrealistic to assume you could package a 10MWh battery in a UK gauge freight locomotive. An EV hummer has a 0.248MWh battery so you’d only need 40 of...

How big a battery would a freight locomotive need to be useful on the GB network?

Also, the weight you’ve quoted for the EV car battery will include the battery conditioning heating/cooling unit etc. So it’s unlikely you will need an extra 8 ton you’ve suggested for this. Are we there yet for full battery electric freight locos? No but the issue is more around cost than...

CMA CGM purchase Freightliner UK intermodal unit.

It is unbelievably shocking how many folk will believe a ludicrous post on here/X/facebook/social media generally without bothering to just spend 30 seconds checking a primary source.

I think that’s supposed to be part of the rhyme!

CMA CGM purchase Freightliner UK intermodal unit.

According to a post on Freightliners LinkedIn* page 90007 was yesterday named 507 (Railway) Specialist Team, Royal Engineers. There is nothing on the LinkedIn page about this: (*I would post a link but on a mobile device it’s simply too difficult on this forum).

Is Grand Central a burden or benefit on Bradford ?

I’m sure GC would very happily provide an hourly service from Bradford if they were granted the paths. It’s also likely that Arriva would be prepared to invest in the station infrastructure if they were given guaranteed long term track access rights. On the other hand LNER would no doubt be...
