Currently on the 16.45 to Cardiff from Paddington class 800. Just fired up its engines at Reading. Interesting, on the same unit this morning and pan up at Didcot. 800 028.
I've been involved in putting funding packages together for a number of public sector schemes and indeed had an input into the initial planning for the Cardiff Capital City Deal and I'm afraid an awful lot of the schemes need EU money to fund them, don't forget all of these plans were drawn up...
I personally think that they should try to capitalise on what's already be done. Concentrate on electrification to Swansea, including via Barry and Maesteg and procure some new BMU such as the Stadler Class 755 for Greater Anglia to replace the 142s and 143s.
To be fair a lot of good has come out of the money, most of the recent station improvements (accessibility etc) have used EU funding, as has the Heads of the Valleys road improvements and of course the line to Ebbw Vale.
I totally agree, however as someone who's worked on a number of multiple funded programmes, if that's where the money is then that's where they will do the work.
There is another reason that the Metro appears to concentrate north of Cardiff - funding. WG are hoping to use ERDF EU funding (whilst they still can) and that is concentrated in the "Convergence" areas North of Cardiff "The Core Valley Lines" in the counties of RCT, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil...

I guess the issue is which unit will be ABCDE and which GHJK. Is A usually at the London end, or E if 1st class is facing London etc? I can just imagine someone with a 1st class seat reservation in E standing on one end of the platform only to find their seat is 10 coaches away if 1st class is...
I think it's hit and miss in terms of the position of first class. On the two occasions I've travelled on then it was in the front and middle on the first occasion and both in the middle on the second. The position is announced before the train arrives. In terms of booking tickets, which end...
It looked fantastic. As for XC, there was a XC HST (43366 leading) at Bristol TM at around 3.30 heading North. Sir Kenneth was great, signing autographs after the naming.

Here's a picture of a class 150 on diversion traversing the normally freight only curve between Ninian Park and Grangetown on a Radyr to Penarth service due to signalling work between Cardiff Queen Street and Radyr back on 29th June.

A few of us have been gradually walking the Wales Coastal Path. We did the section between Severn Tunnel Junction across the old Severn Bridge and then caught the once a week train from Pilning back to STJ on Saturday 8th June. We just managed to catch it. A long time to wait until the next...
A lot of confused users yesterday around Cardiff with the changes. I took a train from Grangetown towards Ninian Park, on which there was a least 1 person who thought is was going to Cardiiff central as usual.
