If you see something dangerous on a line, who to call?

The emergency services can text you a link while speaking to you which you can click on, and sends you to a Web page which will obtain your exact location and send it to the operator you are speaking to. Obviously it depends on you having mobile data access though.

    Continuing chaos on GWR

It always makes me wonder why the TVSC signallers never make use of the general broadcast facility of the GSMR when something like this happens. They could make a general broadcast which the drivers of all trains in the area would receive, telling them what the problem is what's happening about...

Trivia: Longest stretch of coasting on a train in regular passenger service.

Unless running late, I usually coast from Southall West Junction at 125mph all the way into Paddington - a distance of around 10 miles. I don't know how long some of the other examples here are? The train coasts down to 100 just before the 100 PSR board at Acton, and then brake is needed to get...

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

Because from Didcot to Culham, the up line is being used in the wrong direction, so the line speed is 60mph rather than 90. Plus, the train has to stop at the signal before Appleford Crossing, so that the pilot can contact the signaller to gain authority to enter the single line section, and...

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

In this case, it is normal line speed in both directions, except for 15 over the points at Kennington junction in the up direction. The line speed is 90 in the down direction (Radley to Oxford) and 60 in the up direction. (Oxford to Radley.)

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

It was an internal brief put out to drivers on Friday.

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

From 2nd May GWR will start running shuttles between Oxford and Radley, and between Didcot and Culham. It will be pilotman working at both ends, using the down line to and from Radley, and the up line to and from Culham. Trains will not be able to call at Appleford in the Culham direction, due...

Yep, you're right - post edited.

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

The last train on the up was 2L27, the 10.05 OXF - DID stopper. The unit was held at Didcot for a while, unable to run its return 2L22 service to Oxford, before going empty to Reading Traincare Depot. Edit: actually, looks like it was 1O08, as Jimini states above, which was a few minutes behind...

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

Both lines are bi directional from Appleford junction all the way to Wolvercote junction. However, between Appleford junction and Kennington junction, they are one long signalling section in the wrong direction, so it would be just one train in the 8 mile section at a time. Line speed is 60 in...

Just to bring up the Chiltern v GWR 165 discussion again... If a Chiltern driver signs a Chiltern 165, then they also sign a GWR 165. Just like we did when we borrowed a Chiltern set for Greenford a few years ago. We were given a 2 page brief describing the differences between the two variants...

Sunday 0859 Oxford to Paddington unique stopping pattern

As the occasional driver of these services, I'd love to know the reason for the Goring stop too! None of us can work it out. Also remember once doing the same thing with a 180 a few years back.

FPLs for crossovers - are they always present, and how are they shown?

I drive this route, and this question piqued my interest, so I had a look at our route maps to see what they showed. This is the map of Henwick, which shows FPLs in all the right places, which interestingly shows 12A, 10A and 10B points as being fitted with an FPL, so presumably a train can use...

    Max speed...

We had a new operational notice on GWR today that one of the "features" of the new TMS update is that the speed limiter is now not able to be switched off, and will be set at 125mph, with the driver able to select a lower speed. As the speed limiter limits the train speed to 1mph less than the...

Local services operated by 'express' stock for operational convenience

Because Oxford isn't a guard's depot, we don't have any. They also have to taxi a second Reading guard over every morning to work the 05.10 turbo to Worcester. I suspect (but dont actually know for sure because I havent had any experience with Lumo) that the very much real issues with the...

Local services operated by 'express' stock for operational convenience

Just before covid, in order to save an extra turbo having to be kept overnight at Oxford, GWR introduced an early 9 car IET Oxford to Didcot class 2 calling at Radley, which then came back empty stock to Oxford. The set was stabled overnight at Oxford, but not required to start its express...

    IET running on diesel

Just thought I'd mention about the speed limiter that was mentioned up thread - the reason for the train only doing 124mph is not mph/kph conversion, it's because the train holds the speed at 1mph below whatever speed is set on the limiter. I don't know the reason why it does that.

    GWR 10 car 800/802 combo?

When an 800 and an 802 is coupled up, only friction braking is available, no matter which set is leading. When the 800 is leading, the DOO CCTV images can't be seen on the 802 unit. When the 802 is leading, there is no difference in operation. This comes from the brief FGW_DID mentioned.

Driving a train with minor irritations

Well, I imagine it's not such a silly question to someone who has no idea of the mechanics of driving a train. I would think that a lot of people from outside the industry would imagine that a driver has to constantly use both hands when driving a train. The train is controlled by a power and...
