Driverless trains - why limited progress on the national rail network?

Drivers are fairly useful for: Sounding the horn for staff working on or near the line Sounding the horn again if somebody doesn't acknowledge the previous warning Sounding the horn for members of the public about to walk over a level crossing or standing too close to the platform edge...

Train pulls away with children left on platform

It would only cause delay. The train would not be able to set back.

    Leeds Track Changes This XMAS

Micklefield S&C renewals. That should mean the junction can be taken faster and people no longer fall over when the train traverses the switch toes.

'Idiotic' man caught riding on top of Chester-bound train

He was lucky he wasn't squashed by an overbridge. Anything over 100mm is classed as a normal clearance.

Unsettling Rumours about Kings Cross suburban platforms

Apparently not! The remodelling (which is very extensive) is part of the resignalling/ETCS scheme. It's still at GRIP 3 though, so things could change.

Unsettling Rumours about Kings Cross suburban platforms

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the railway rumour mill. The existing platform 10 will be abolished and the existing platform 11 will be renamed platform 10. Platform 9 will be extended.

    Aire / Wharfe Delays 28/10

It's not just the triangle. The RHTT didn't run last night due to traction issues so several lines are affected.

Flange squeal is caused by the wheel flanges rubbing against the gauge face of the rail. Wheel flanges do not normally come into contact with the running rails; this only happens on tight curves. It's not necessarily that the wheel is under or over rotating, but that it is at an angle to the...

S&C closed North of Kirkby Stephen

It would be cheaper and easier to work by pilotman from Culgaith to Langwathby/the point of obstruction.

Why no ticket gates at Doncaster?

Doncaster is a hotspot for fare evasion on VTEC trains as well. I have been told that, several years ago, two guards were rostered on some services between York and Donny to sell tickets to people who were hoping for a free ride.

York area: Surviving Signal boxes/PSBs/SSCs etc?

York PSB was between platforms 8 and 9. The building is now used as VTEC offices. Poppleton and Strensall signal boxes are both operational and nearby.

What to do when doors wont open

I normally run to another door when this happens, but if you end up being overcarried then a complaint to the guard should get your ticket endorsed for travel back from the next station. If there are no more trains, or there isn't one for ages, the TOC should arrange a taxi. I'd also claim...
