Drivers are fairly useful for:
Sounding the horn for staff working on or near the line
Sounding the horn again if somebody doesn't acknowledge the previous warning
Sounding the horn for members of the public about to walk over a level crossing or standing too close to the platform edge...

Doncaster is a hotspot for fare evasion on VTEC trains as well. I have been told that, several years ago, two guards were rostered on some services between York and Donny to sell tickets to people who were hoping for a free ride.
York PSB was between platforms 8 and 9. The building is now used as VTEC offices.
Poppleton and Strensall signal boxes are both operational and nearby.
I normally run to another door when this happens, but if you end up being overcarried then a complaint to the guard should get your ticket endorsed for travel back from the next station.
If there are no more trains, or there isn't one for ages, the TOC should arrange a taxi.
