    A career as a signaller

For a regular man on a 12 hour roster with 2 booked Sundays a month. Around 67k a year. In areas with plenty of OT available I've seen people take around 95k. But that is working a *lot* of OT which won't actually be possible when the 60 hour week is enforced. (Being introduced Jan 24 in our...

    Manchester Victoria then and now

I can't remember where this came from originally, but for those unfamiliar this is the best map I've seen of Victoria before the Arena arrived (no idea exactly what date this is from, sorry)

There are currently 9 Workstations and there are currently some ongoing discussions about the grades/links for these but at the moment - Manchester Central Manchester North Manchester Oxford Rd As a Grade 8 regular link Liverpool Lime St Liverpool As a Grade 8 regular link Wavetree...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Oh I agree, PDP's are totally a tool to beat drivers, as you say no chance of tripping OSS if you drive according to the standard because the speed is set so low, drive within the limits of the unit and trip the OSS immediately get a talking too for breaching the PDP. Ah, I understand the...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

If it doesn't cause a delay, and keeps options for regulation open it's unlikely to be changed I'm afraid. It's pretty rare signallers know the PDP for TOCs even exists let alone having any visability of them. As an SSM I had multiple arguements with EMR about the ridiculous nature of their...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

The ARS issue has had some teething issues that are way more problematic than that. To be fair what is the problem with arriving in to a station you're booked to call at on a red? Especially if as you say you're already running early? At other locations ARS has delayed route calls for...

    Overcrowding during Easter

Also a decent number of fans travelling by train from Wigan to Sheffield for the football yesterday.

Is this what you call a SPAD?

Thin end of the wedge isn't it? At what distance travelled do you require a second member of staff for the movement? 5m? 20m? 50m? Whose putting their name to the risk assessment? That's the big issue when you downgrade a safe method of work, if you're that confident that you put your name to...

Is this what you call a SPAD?

The delay attribution guide was ammended for this - it now reads that if the driver is unable to to stop at the junction signal safely it's only is he then passes another signal on the incorrect route that the incident would be split between the signaller and the driver. In the Manchester area...

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

To be fair, Blackpool North does have a useful override switch which can be used to bypass the Lime St control if you have an assurance the train will fit on the Platform in question. So it's not quite as much of an issue there.

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

Yup, spare part arrived to repair 5071. A few days later theatre in 3067 went. So as you say, the spare part went into 3067 and 5071 went back to being worked around. Couldn't make it up.

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

The main reason would be to allow incoming services to arrive into platforms 1 and 2 while simultaneously departing from 3-5. This has become a lot more relevent recently as signal 5071 has been signed out of use for weeks due to a defective theatre indicator with no spare available. 1680286915...

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

Wow. Let's unpick how much of this is wrong. First of all Lime St controls are in the interlocking on all platforms with the exception of 7 and 8. Lime St Workstation has no ARS at all. ARS as fitted to workstations in Manchester ROC has no idea what stock is allocated to a service and as...

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

Nothing quite that exciting. The single bore tunnel from platform 1, the signal at the end of the platform will not clear unless the forward route is set. (Too stop the train getting held in the tunnel) 1680171803 Yup! That's what I meant. Though the tunnel control I mentioned is a separate...

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

Not to mention with Northerns train crew shortages some of these trains are standing down at Lime St for quite some time. If a train arrives at 1700 and it's next work is 2330 (happened to me recently) should we be leaving that train open and accessible? If it's locked up and then train in...

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

You didn't say though, you just edited it now to say that. As someone who worked at terminal stations for 8 years (the station in question and Manchester Piccadilly) the amount of people I've seen miss trains or be carried to a destination they didn't want from boarding the wrong train when...

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

If you'd ever worked at a station where this is a regular occurrence you'd know it's not silly, it's best practice. The alternative is the first train usually departs late as passengers are moved from the block set to the correct train, either by announcement or someone walking through the train.

Poor platform allocating at Liverpool Lime Street

Liverpool Lime St has a locally produced simplifier which does not align with the train plan inputted by the train planners at Milton Keynes. This is due to quirks in the signalling at Lime St that are often missed/not fully understood by the planners (often around Lime St controls) Added to...

    A career as a signaller

The most popular variants I've seen to make the roster compliant involve taking one the the shifts from those two weeks that are non compliant and moving a single shift to the full week off, most often the Wednesday night.
