Freedom Pass to become buses only?

There is no reason to subside rail travel for pensioners other than to buy votes.

Northern cancellations Sunday 14th/Monday 15th December due to forecasted rain

I haven't seen any evidence of flooding on the Furness Line - by far the biggest impact of these cancellations? Also impacting services across the NW. Northern, like the rest of the TOCs, throw in the towel ridiculously early with Cumbria/North Lancashire. I understand the genuine operational...

Northern cancellations Sunday 14th/Monday 15th December due to forecasted rain

One of the most uninformed takes I've ever read on this website. It was a yellow warning. The buses were fine, the roads were fine - the railway failing to operate is just incompetence in the supposed name of safety.

Great British Railways livery: Alternative suggestions/variations

They should’ve taken the old Stagecoach SWT livery and modernised it. It would’ve been perfect, and pleased the flag lovers.

Station Name Rationalisation in the South Wales Area

So much of our taxpayer’s money is being wasted on Welsh/English versions in Wales. Use the name that’s most common in the area. It’s not hard. And it really shouldn’t be ignored how much productivity is being lost through all these bi-lingual efforts, however well intentioned. (And for those...

Is there a better way to deal with WCML disruption north of Preston?

Avanti have made some improvement on this in recent years - they’re now operating between Preston - Carlisle semi regularly if the line further north is closed. This is a improvement on what was the case previously. Still, during disruption over Shap, Oxenholme should effectively be a...

Older Persons Bus Pass Holders Should Get Free Rail Travel

The taxpayer already subsidises the lives of rich pensioners far too much. If anything, a targeted youth discount (16-25 50% discount with the railcard?) would be much more effective for a fairer society.

Cancelled due to ‘a short notice change to the timetable’

And Northern are perfectly entitled to propose changes to the contract that bring them back in touch with operational reality. Sadly, they have failed to put together an offer that reflects this reality. At this point, at least new starters should be employed with Sundays in the working week.

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

The people who run the service are guided by the DfT’s cost cutting, not my best interest as a passenger. As mentioned several times (and ignored by you) this was the standard under Virgin. Both are unacceptable - not sure why one being worse is relevant? Sorry, but this reeks of just...

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

What you're ignoring that, regardless of whether you consider it acceptable, it is absolutely possible to maintain a limited service to the North without putting the busier southbound service to the dogs. As mentioned earlier in the thread, a crew doing Preston - Carlisle could very reasonably...

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

There was no service to Oxenholme for 3 hours with no RRB. That's unacceptable. There needs to be a minimum service maintained - especially if the stock and crew were meant to be on that journey anyway. If the tourist season is about 3 months long, and the figures are over 12 months, of...

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

I don’t get your logic. If a Preston crew is allocated to a set, and the set has come up on a London-Glasgow trip, there is absolutely no reason that journey shouldn’t go ahead. The service to the North shouldn’t be disrupted purely to maintain service to the South.

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

As I mentioned previously on this thread, the Avanti service (along with the TPE) serves as the local, regional and intercity service for the region. Oxenholme is also a railhead for the South Lakes, whilst Penrith does the same for the North Lakes. Those ORR figures don't take into account the...

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

This isn't true - there is also resource based in Preston. There is no reason why a Pendo booked all the way to Glasgow with a Preston crew can't go up to the line block - whether that be Lancaster, Oxenholme or Carlisle. As mentioned earlier in the thread: The South Cumbrians would disagree...

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

Windermere was operated by TPE when VHF was introduced - 100mph 185s. The interchange would still work fine if Avanti decided it would operate the service. But as soon as anything goes wrong, Avanti pretends its route map ends at Preston.

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

What lots of people don’t realise is that the WCML north of Preston isn’t just an Intercity service; it is also a regional express and commuter service in one. There are no regular buses from Kendal to Penrith; you’d have to go up to Keswick and back over, taking about 3 hours. Likewise, the...

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

The line between Preston and Oxenholme is fully functional - as a passenger, I shouldn’t have to care what happened further up if a train can still physically reach the destination, and especially if it can terminate early and come back!

WCML Derailment in Cumbria - 29th May 2024

I think it would be unfair to Ryanair’s social media team to associate Avanti with them! Outright lies like the one made in that tweet just destroy passenger trust in the railway. Another reason to buy a car I suppose…
