Limitations of rail don't explain why (for example) you can't tell customers there's not going to be any food on board until it's too late for them to make alternative plans. Good hospitality sector managers (and staff, for that matter) find ways of solving these problems, rather than just...
Given the much vaunted "hotel on wheels" branding, I'd suggest that maybe CS needs to hire people from outside 'the industry'. Perhaps from, say, the hospitality sector? Hiring a manager to come in and recognise that some of the service provided is atrocious for a hotel might actually shake...
I've only read the Great Northern consultation, but that looks like it is almost exactly the same as the May 2019 timetable. Quite why there's a need for a consultation 12 months in advance about a timetable that's supposed to have been running for two years already is a bit mysterious! Mind...
Sorry for bringing this up a few pages later... Serco Caledonian Sleepers Ltd will probably never be in the position to legally pay a dividend, with an £88m shareholders deficit on the latest balance sheet. But I don't see that getting in the way of bashing "greedy shareholders".
One wonders...
I believe City Thameslink was called St Paul's when it first opened. The problem was that the Central line station of the same name is a few hundred yards away at the other end of the cathedral, and this led to large numbers of very confused tourists.
Definitely use Highbury & Islington. It's cross-platform to the Vic line (assuming you're continuing s'bound).
Finsbury Park involves a longer walk, and one of the two staircases is a spiral.
I don't think anyone has yet nominated Moorgate. This is a major commuter terminus, with 12tph in the peaks, and part of the 'London Terminals' group. Yet it has two NR platforms in a dark, dirty, hole in the ground.
I'm not sure how much use terminating at Kirkham would be. A sizeable portion of the traffic on the line is connected to other services at Preston, and adding a change at Kirkham is a retrograde step for that journey!
Tramway conversion in general seems a bit of a pipe-dream, really. You'd...
Walthamstow Central - Liverpool St - Stratford - Gospel Oak - Walthamstow Queens Road.
Mind you, walking between the bits of Stratford is probably about quarter of a mile in its own right.
The most readily addressable issue, from what I can remember of the reports I've read, was planning for the best-case scenario. When the initial problem occurred with the first train struggling to draw power and move, a plan was developed to remedy this. If that had worked, then the situation...
10%!? For a civil engineering contractor? You're joking. Most of the T1 contractors (i.e. the ones that take on a Crossrail-sized job) regard 1.5% margin as a really good result. And they'll never get that on a job that overruns by four years.
This is a particularly strong line:
In other words, we have no idea what this will cost or who is going to pay for it. Anyone care to estimate the likely costs of wiring up a few hundred line-kms in some fairly remote parts of the country?
Before the 313s were retired from Great Northern, they occasionally ran as single units (3 coach), using platform 3 at Gordon Hill and (I tihnk ) Hertford North.
