True enough.
The various firms of which of which there was a number, Butlins being the most famous, did certainly have that Hi-Di-Hi army boot camp feel to them.
Well they did in 1960s Scotland.

Doubt too many on here will remember the Co-Op had a...
I,ll admit i googled this station after reading your post.
It brought back vague memories of a holiday to Ostend i took back in 1978.
Glasgow Central to Euston by sleeper and then train out to Southend, take it i got a bus out to the airport.
Any idea who the airline was that did...
Not looking too good for anything south of Girvan.
Took a while but privitisation got Stranraer in the end.
Wonder how long before a bypass round Maybole is built.
Still, an Ayr South station sounds good.

"We need a picture of soldiers on a train because Network Rail is sponsoring the game for Poppy Day"
Once the present M80 and the M74 Completion are finished there can,t be any major road building projects left to do in the Greater Glasgow area.
Or is there?
I followed up on the history of the Stranraer/Ayr line.
One thing that stands out is the Stranraer line has been under threat for the last 40+ plus years.

Now that the ships are ready to sail for the last...
I was under the impression the new Stena Line terminal at Cairnryan was beside the P+O terminal.
I now find out from Stena,s own website that its two miles further north.
Not exactly within walking distance for a foot passenger.
Wondered why the name change to Loch Ryan Port...
A number of years ago, late 90s, i followed this very subject up.
Little did i know the rail link was under threat in the near future.
At that time my interest was the fare structure.
Personally i thought foot passengers could be allowed on the ferries free or at least a nominal fare, say a...
Don,t really think Stranraer every really had a complete monopoly of the Belfast route over the years and for that it has suffered.
A direct overnight boat from Glasgow to Belfast existed until the late 1960s at least and later from Ardrossan with Burns and Laird...
Take it going by this photograph from flickr that construction is well under way.

That would fit in with the terminal being open late 2011/early2012.
Stena's own magazine from the late 1990s which i remember reading on board ship one...
Slight problem with using the Troon/Larne Express fastcraft is it doesn,t run in the winter.
I have doubts the fastcraft is up to sailing the North Channel in choppy winter seas.
P+O Irish Ferries might pass it off as a seasonal route as the fastcraft doesn,t carry HGVs.
So it would have to...
There isn,t a lot in it, time wise, between using an express bus and the train on the Glasgow/Stranraer route, the bus might be slightly quicker on the Girvan/Stranraer part of the journey.
The train loses out on that giant loop leaving Girvan heading for Stranraer via Barrhill.
The bus has a...
The difference in price between the train/boat and flying has changed vastly over the years.
In 1980 i paid £58 return to fly with British Airways on the Glasgow/Belfast route.
The train/boat return fare at the time was £19.
The foot passenger, quite rightly, has grown wings.
I have doubts...
I,m curious where the bus, any bus, would drop you off at Cairnryan.
Maybe on the main road between the two terminals.
Would the bus go to the two ferry terminals?
Once Stena Line have left Stranraer what would the big connection between them and Scotrail be.
None that i can see.
