Annoying terms used on television programmes

You have very low expectations of the viewing audience. I'm not familiar with the word intumescent, but there's nothing else too mystifying in the rest of that sentence, and even if there was, I'd probably extract the precise gist of the discussion from the context of the narration. Done to...

    390 question

I think the OP meant on the bogie, like a third-rail collector shoe, and not on a pantograph coach.

Beeching: The wonderful gift of hindsight.

This is the exact same point I'd planned to raise once I'd read through the thread. Its one thing that a transport corridor is out of use, quite another that its effectively gone for good.

My idea for Sheffield to London to become driverless

I didn't realise that the Eschede accident involved a driverless unit and could have been avoided had a human driver been in post. Please excuse my ignorance.

My idea for Sheffield to London to become driverless

I work at driver-less train factory and think its a marvelous idea... Its funny how many posters are pro-nationalisation and value the efficient safe running of the network in the interest of its users, right up to the point where their job is somehow effected by such progress, or their...

    Train design - what next?

Why not have windows that line up with seats instead? Design the exterior to align with the seating plan instead.

Which station can you see the train coming from furthest away?

Thurnscoe looking south to see trains approaching from Goldthorpe.

    Bighat court conviction

Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom, or so the saying goes. Good work and well done to all concerned. We each have a responsibility to each other to keep an eye out and act accordingly.

Telescope required to buy cigarettes !!!

I noticed at motorway services the other day that my old favourite is now £7.90 for 20  And I could easily get through 40 a day. Give em up, you'll wonder what you ever got from it. The answer of course is nothing.

Commuter dragged after hand stuck in door

For which the penalty is death? A moron might try to board the train while the doors are beeping, but so might a deaf person. If a train can depart a station while physically attached to person on the platform, as others have said, there are lessons to be learned. This opportunity should...

Woman thrown off train after loud sex chat on phone

Couldn't quite tell on my small screen, but was that catherine tate or a little britton sketch?

"This is due to waiting on a train member"?

I habitually thank bus drivers, even when they're a grumpy wotnot that deserved no such courtesy. Never seen a train driver under circumstances I could thank them though, not without it being a bit creepy.

    Partners, Taking an interest.

Wife is largely supportive of my interest, but that's easy as its mostly a theoretical diversion these days, and doesn't tend to intrude on our lives. We often spend an hour or so at Hest Bank though at weekends eating a burger, taking the sea air and watching the trains go by, and that seems...

Drivers using mobiles while waiting for their train.

I doubt many would bat an eyelid at the sight of a driver on a mobile phone on the platform. Many probably wouldn't even register that there was a driver on the platform, but that doesn't mean that public perception doesn't matter. I can see why a driver (or even guard) might be banned from...

Not so much a rant, more of a moan.....

That was my experience too. I had a Hornby class 37 with class 47 bogies  , and my class 08 was a joke along side the equivalent Lima class 09. I had two DMUs in my collection, a 142 and a 156. One of them was a reliable runner gave many hours of pleasure, the pacer rarely left the...

Drivers using mobiles while waiting for their train.

I agree, complaints would be thin on the ground. I wasn't passing comment on the Driver's use of a mobile, only the suggestion that an ASDA checkout person is in anyway inferior to a train driver.

Drivers using mobiles while waiting for their train.

Not planet Snob I'd guess. What does salary have to do with comparing the public perception of a uniformed service sector employee with a uniformed service sector employee?

Union announces 6 strike dates for EMT drivers

Here we go... Yes. No. I spent my youth in low paid work enjoying cheap beer and cheaper women. I may be having to work harder for the future now but theres not a pension scheme on the planet I would swap for those days. Or perhaps I could negotiate for myself. Whenever I have a...
