Very true. The organisation 'gets' to people more than the work. It went seriously downhill under Stephenson and Hogan-Who. There needs to be a big clear out at the top. The atmosphere might change under a new Commission next year, but I wouldn't bank on it. The number of people resigning or...
I made the switch from the police to train driving so perhaps can shed some light:
Policing cons
++++++++
Pay: A Met new joiner will be on about £25K (figures include £6k London weighting). It used to take about ten years to get to £39-40K, but I gather that timescale may have reduced slightly...
Yes, but it's common to get cautionary aspects on the approach to/through NXG due to the South Bermondsey bottleneck and having keep the Sussex Reversible free for Down trains. If the controlled signals are switched to auto more often it would suggest more greens and sailing through USF onto...
Sounds like a good start. I was looking at RTT earlier and there were a few trains nicking a minute or so in both directions. With down trains now using line 9/DSS, I'm assuming those on the USF weren't having to get checked down/crossed over just after New Cross Gate? If so that should speed...
If we're talking about a failed train and the driver is off elsewhere and, assuming other lines are still open, then red-buttoning the GSM-R by the guard could potentially stop other trains in the vicinity pretty sharpish.
They might not see them as authority, but some people are willing to listen to advice/instructions and be deterred from following the pack of sheep.
If a fire breaks outs obviously people are either going to move coach immediately or, if the train is stopped, try to self-evacuate. That's...
The scenario described earlier was a failed train with the driver off doing assistance protection or being driven by the MOM to get an assistance train. i.e. driver not present.
Yes. And in such circumstances the guard can alert the signaller who can then block other lines/switch off power to minimise risk. I doubt passengers on a DOO train are going to give the signaller a bell before they decide to self-evacuate are they! Jesus wept.
This is bad news for the railways. Under these proposals BTP will become part of the local constabulary. Railway stations will simply become 'another department' or posting that will used and abused on the local radio channel. Watch railway station cops getting sucked into city/town centre...
Can't be trusted to train people to the correct standard, or can't be trusted to put enough recruits through the training? I assume you are referring to the latter, if not produce your evidence for the former.
You're a bit out of date....a good chunk of training is already done in the classroom and simulator environment. Thameslink haven't invested in brand new full emersion simulators for the fun of it.
Regardless of the amount of classroom input or simulator work you still need time learning...
The scrolling platform PIS screens won't need new equipment.
'Countdown' minutes seem to be generally used when services are very close together and all heading to the same place - e.g. Clapham Junc London bound platforms - to avoid confusion.
Not sure its appropriate where trains are spaced...
Terminal station capacity will ultimately limit what can be achieved by digital signalling. Pointless having trains spaced by a couple of minutes if at the end of line there are no platforms to put them in. The existing 6 minute turnarounds on 10 coach services are already too tight, hence...
All of those things can be specified in a new franchise agreement. TOCs bidding to win will want to address them.
And TFL couldn't address those things without putting up fares!
