Avanti West Coast - QUALIFIED Drivers - Euston & Wolves (29/07/21)

Haven’t got one to hand, but as far as I know you’ll sign 221’s & 390’s from the off; Euston - Preston, Man Picc via Wilmslow/Stoke, Chester and the West Midlands (Liverpool comes later with link progression if I’m not mistaken) and Wembley. Roster is quite intense, lots of long stints on but...

How many applications and interviews until you cracked it?

Applied twice for Gateline in 2014 aged 17…started driving on my own in January 2020 aged 22.

Avanti West Coast - QUALIFIED Drivers - Euston & Wolves (29/07/21)

Ah shame, that’s my decision made then! Thank you. 1627654914 Always been interested in driving the WCML, but based on what I’ve now been told regarding career breaks, I’ll probably wait a few more years before applying.

Avanti West Coast - QUALIFIED Drivers - Euston & Wolves (29/07/21)

Bit of a random question here guys, but does anyone know if Avanti offer their staff the chance to take a career break? I’m currently with SWR and it’s something we’re very fortunate to have, looking at taking a year off to go travelling in the future.

Different Driver Depot, Route and Traction cards

153’s now in service on the West Highland Line, assume it’ll be Glasgow Queen St (WHL link), Oban, Fort William and Mallaig who sign them?

    Conductor at a younger age

I started as a Guard aged 18 (joined the railway aged 17 as a Gateline Assistant) a year and a half before that. Landed the drivers job at 21 after that. Age is just a number, as long as you’ve got the experience needed for the role, you’ve got as much chance as everyone else!

Minimum age to work on the railways?

Hi Jess, Usually, you have to be 18 to work on the railway however there are some exceptions to that - local to you, depending on what area of the business you’re interesting in, ScotRail offer an engineering or a customer service apprenticeship which you can apply for between the ages of 16-25...

    GWR or SWR?

That “long weekend” being Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Yes, the shift times might be slightly more sociable but having worked with CA’s and having been a guard myself on a similar roster to GWR conductors, I know which one i‘d rather take!

    GWR or SWR?

As far as I’m aware, you’ll get a 5 day weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon, Tues) every 3 weeks if you get the Conductor job with GWR. Customer Ambassador, you’ll get nothing like that, more like single days off with very few full weekends to yourself. Better pay as a conductor, far more varied...

Avanti West Coast recruiting QUALIFIED DRIVER TALENT POOL ONLY at London Euston, Liverpool, Manchester, and Wolverhampton depots. (Posted 1/2-09-2020)

Call me crazy, but I’d rather do more days on in a row to get that 5th week off. Where I am at the moment, we have an average 4 day week with Sunday’s included and with my roster, we don’t work any more than 4 days on in a row and more often than not, we go from extremely earlies to extreme...

SWR Guard to Commercial Guard - How? When?

The Commercial Course is delivered by one of the customer service trainers based at the training school in Basingstoke (the ROC), hence why it isn’t done locally. Providing the course hasn’t changed too much since I did it (3 years ago), it’s a very thorough course followed by quite a long...

SWR Guard to Commercial Guard - How? When?

1/2. No, you have to apply for the Commercial Guard role internally. You can only apply when they release an internal advert for the role. You have to carry out two additional assessments down at Southampton (ticket checking and ticket selling); pass those and you’ll have an interview with the...

    SWR Driver Pay Scales

    - £24,469 during rules. - £28,829 during your hours and traction. - £33,008 after passing your final competency assessment, route learning. - £51,817 once you're out driving on your own after doing all your route learning. As previously mentioned, we are overdue a pay deal so those figures...

    Fratton depot shift roster

Smashing mate, yep that's the great thing about the railway, always plenty of opportunities to move around once you've got your foot in the door. Hope the training all goes well!

    Fratton depot shift roster

I'll be totally honest pal, keep an eye out for conductor vacancies with Great Western Railway at Fratton if you're concerned about the roster and shifts with SWR - you'll enjoy an average 35 hour 4 day working week (Sundays not included, correct me if I'm wrong!) with GWR and with the odd...
