Forgive what may be a very noddy question but I recently received my copy of the excellent London Railway Atlas and something stood out to me - the sheer quantity of tracks in some areas versus others.
In particular, I know that the Thameslink core section is planned to have 24 tph through...
Page 23 of the Strategic Business Case document says:
"This approach uses the existing MML corridor from the Greater London boundary near Elstree tunnel. From Elstree tunnel the New Line route shares the corridor with the M1 motorway. At Silkstream Junction the existing route becomes a six...
I think we all have to keep reminding ourselves the main reason behind a HS2 line is: capacity, capacity, capacity.
I really don't understand why so much money has been spent on the WCML upgrade just for it to be full again in the near future but nevertheless the common-sense approach is to...
What's the patronage on this line like? I checked a couple of station figures on the wiki page and some are literally a 7000 a year i.e. about 19 people a day.
>The reason for the Eurostar being transferred to the UK for third rail testing was because it would be using third rail for half the journey from Waterloo - Ashford
Am I missing something? I wasn't aware there are any plans for a Waterloo to Ashford Eurostar service. And Eurostar trains...
Thanks for the info - in the last couple of days some work appears to have started on the north end of the central platform, which is where I thought it would have to go before that siding was pointed out.
I agree the footbridge is pretty grim.
Anyone noticed the brick building still partly...
Why does prevent the platform being extended north? There's a huge gap between the fast and slow lines, regardless of whether there is a centre siding between the slow lines or not.
Found this on LonondReconnections which describes the schedule and has mock ups etc:

I'm surprised to see St Ablans being extended south as there's much more space to the north towards the bridge - you can even see...
Very interesting document - but could anyone explains the pros and cons of the two main systems in the UK - OLE (AC) and third rail (DC)?
The document stated DC requires shorter distances between substations, but surely the costs of erecting overhead lines and their steel pillars is much...
I agree - I was more trying to point out that as more of these buildings disappear, you'll start seeing the "fondness" of them increase - the same thing happened with Victorian buildings; they were once considered old fashioned by 50's and 60's politicians and public alike, preferring their...
Do you mean treating the existing 60's station as heritage or a new build with "classic" styles? I can picture a situation where parts of the existing architecture are kept - although I don't have the vision for exactly what!
I'm also expecting 60's architecture to experience an increased...
I've spent a lot of time recently reading up on Euston Arch, the St Pancras redevelopment and the Bishopsgate Goods Yard.
I find St Pancras simply stunning - it took my breath away when I first walked in. It's by that same token I find the other losses even more upsetting as with a little...
Interesting about the tunnel being demolished.
Fair point about core capacity - branch lines can reduce capacity of the mainlines, something I believe a certain Dr B made! ;)
Yes, I was talking about the right hand one - Snow Hill Jnc to Barbican, South-West to North-East.
Obviously if there's no use for the tracks they'll be lifted - I guess my question was more couldn't they still have use if there was a usable tunnel between Snow Hill Jnc and Barbican going...
Was it/would it ever possible to allow southern TOC to have trains running along to the old route from Holburn Vaiduct Low Level to Barbican as depicted here:
http://www.londonrailways.net/snowhill.htm
I read the old tunnel was infilled which would be a shame, but basically even if trains can...
I had a failure to call tonight on FCC where it skipped Harpenden and Luton AP meaning a whole trainful of people had to scamper over the bridge at Luton to head back down.
I was a bit cheesed off as there was no announcement so sent a firm but polite complaint to them saying we weren't given...
I'd be worried such a large and expensive scheme would divert money away from necessary work with the existing network, including smaller reinstatement schemes.
Have they said if they are reusing any of the old Great Central route?
Cool - appreciate it.
Actually it's Mill Hill Broadway that's already been extendend and not Cricklewood that I mentioned in my first post.
There are loads of Hippo bags full of earth and rubble at my station, Harpenden, which I assume they'll use for filling in platform extension spaces?
